What to bring to the PotLuck Dinner??

Ok, everyone -- I got the question this time ---

My folks are joining us for the Dragon weekend. While my father and I are in the father/daughter competition for chili cook-off -- my hubby and mother need to bring something to the table. Now, let's face it --- I'll be making my hubby's potluck item --- BUT what should Mommy bring???

So, I gets to thinking -- what is everyone bringing this year? I remember the cracker overload of last year --- so let's compare notes.

Help me pick a dish for my mother, PLEASE.

Hugs,
PB

Ummm Cookies are always good... but also I can only think of deserts right now... not that that is a bad thing

Fresh corn on the cob is always good...

How about my mom's favorite pot luck dish: cheesy squash casserole.

Or for a real southern style dessert, banana pudding with vanilla wafers

Mac-n-cheese, PB! Nice with chili! (Besides, in the South, doesn't it count as a veggie side dish?)

Ok, maybe I should clear up

Thank you for your suggestions for my mother (kool: don't fear my son has the market cornered on NILLA Wafers)....but I'm looking much more to what YOU might be bringing. Mom's an outstanding cook and she'll make something totally awesome -- but I'm not asking her to bring one thing to find that we are getting a table full of the same thing -----so alas ---

I see Pretzels and Oreo Pie.....anything else? Who's on soda detail?

Hugs,
PB

Hmmm, yummy idea. My sister just lives off the Parkway. Maybe I could go use her oven after the touring rally and bring 'em in hot. We don't call it pone though and we don't do muffins. We use that big black iron (pronounced ahhrrrn) skillet.

Oh, Donna --- I remember by great, grandmother who was from Alabama used to make cornbread in a skillet (goodness that thing was old) that was SO heavy -- oh but so yummy....hot with butt er oh, nothing is better.

You know, now that I think about it -- I totally remember why I'm all about the "sides" to a meal and less about the meat --- no one in the world knows how to make veggies and bread that us southerners!!!

Hugs,
PB

PS I have a cabin at the Fontana -- want to "borrow" my oven for the really hot stuff??

Is there no "official" sign-up list of what is needed for the potluck? Maybe something showing categories?

For example, the following categories could be used, and enough for 8-10 people is a good rule of thumb:
  • Salads
  • Appetizers (chicken wings, cheese, dips, with necessary crackers/chips)
  • Fresh Fruit (watermelon, grapes, etc.)
  • Casseroles
  • Side Dishes (such as mac-n-cheese, baked beans, roasted vegetables)
  • Breads (cornbread, biscuits, rolls, garlic toast)
  • Desserts (Cookies, Brownies, Cakes, Pies)
  • Beverages (Coffee, Tea, Sodas, Beer, Wine, Bottled Water)
I plan to bring a Chinese Chicken Salad, a really BIG one! And I think that sndwave is bringing a cheese platter.

I pray that people don't just plop a bag of potato chips on the communal table. Anyone bringing something ought to provide a way to serve it in an attractive and easily-used way. Please provide a platter, basket or bowl and any necessary serving utensils.

Forgive me if this was mentioned on the Chili Cook-Off/Potluck page, but is the host club providing plates, plasticware, napkins, and cups?

Chips are fine, but I do remember a vast amount of chips and crackers and a very short supply of fine dips to go along with them last year

Maybe people will consider making a fantastic dip for their bag of chips or crackers.

That give me a very good idea!

Perhaps there should be an additional prize category for the best potluck item/items?

My mother has two of these skillets that are about 80 years old. In her will it states that one will be given to each of her children. Us southerners take Iron skillets seriously.

Now, must decide what to bring for pot luck....

My biggest issue was the lack of silverware... I got to eat late since I was watching David, and when I made it over to the food I had to find a way to enjoy a salad with a spoon and a knife! And it was the last spoon on the table too!

Duh, aren't the sample bowls and spoons being supplied by the organizers??? or are the chili contestants supposed to bring them??? Sam's sells 300 spoons heavy duty for like $7, can the organizers clarify this? Thanks:smile:

Sample cups are being supplied by Smoky Mountain MINIs. I'm fairly sure that spoons go with that -- -but I'm sure Queen B can clarify for us.

I am stepping in momentarily for the chairperson for this event. I do know that SMM will be providing the necessary disposables for the chili sampling and I believe for consuming the pot luck items. Folks do need to be prepared to serve their pot luck item. I will have more details momentarily and have an official pot luck item sign up thread.
