National championships have been won on both wheel sizes, but the 16s are most common in grid. I don't think I've ever seen anyone on aftermarket 15s (holeys only) but if you can get past the eyewatering price some of them are light enough that they might offer an advantage.

That said, I wouldn't spend any money on wheels until they finalize the rules for next year. If they keep the +/- 1 wheel diameter proposal a 15x6.5 might be the ideal size.

 

that'll probably end up what it is and 15x6.5 is the go to wheel.. I guess I shouldn't pay for holies now if their worth as far as auto-x goes is diminished next year..

 

I'm very tempted to try some 15x6.5 with 225/45-15 BFG Rivals. I get wider and shorter tires. SSR do a type-C in 15x6.5 which weighs 9.1lb. That compares to the Type-Cs in 16x6.5 I've already got at 11.3lb. Another possibility is Type-Cs in 16x7 at 11lb.

I'm running 205/45-16 on the 16s currently, there isn't much else in 16s, the alternatives are bit taller, 225/45 or 225/50.

Pricey is relative. Autocross and HS in particular is about the cheapest form of motorsports there is. Its well within our budget, outspending the competition is another way of getting an unfair advantage.

 

Do you mean in 2014? I thought 15x6.5 would not be legal this year in Stock...

is anyone else concerned that, if we buy non stock sized wheels (15x6.5 or 16x7), that they could later amend the rule, i.e., make the +- 1in only for standard wheels, or something like that, and we'd be totally SOL as far as just having purchased wheels that almost certainly no one will want anymore?

I can see that potentially unfolding, since it's not in the spirit of the rule they made.

 

I'm not worried. They needed some rule to allow other wheel sizes, and they had enough trouble coming up with this rule. (Based on conversations with a committee member.) They can't make it for standard wheel only, and I'm not even sure what you mean by that, after market wheels need to be allowed or their would be a revolt.

I don't know what you mean by the spirit of the rules. It allows +/-1" and we're using +/-1". The necessity for the rule was to allow alternate sizes for cars which had a hard time finding tires with stock sizes. MINI do benefit from it as a side effect of that.

 

After reading the threads over on SCCAforums I see what you're getting at.

Any rules changes proposed now don't get enacted until next January. So we're going to have these rules for at least this year.

By standard you seem to mean as standard from the manufacturer, not an option. That's confusing as the rules define "standard" to mean any option you can get from the factory (or port). There's nothing in the rules which would allow a rule to be written like that. Making a rule to mean that would be a nightmare, and probably fall flat on its face.

And by spirit of the rule, I assume you mean "intent". This is definitely not the intent, but it is the effect. Rules always get exploited to the fullest extent of their wording. Intent of a rule means nothing, if its not specified in the rule itself, it can't be enforced.
