no-start and CID dims, but then starts

2019 MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL4

This car normally starts instantaneously, but yesterday when I got in, the middle instrument display (CID) lit up, but when I toggled the start toggle, the CID dimmed and no-start (but radio was still playing). So strange, I thought I was doing something wrong (maybe I was?). Anyway, I did it a couple more times with same behavior. Then I waited a minute and tried again and it started normallly.

Is this something common? I searched around and found threads about dim or flickering displays, but nothing related to no-start at the same time.

thx

I'd bet on the battery being defective, but best to bring it in to the dealership as it's still likely under warranty if you're driving a 2019. They will likely check the charging circuit at the same time since if the battery doesn't have a full charge it's possible that the alternator isn't charging it.

I'll second that thought about the battery. The lifespan on MINI batteries has always seemed to be a bit on the short side and once they start acting up, numerous problems appear.

Battery. Or, loose battery connection. VERY common in many of the more modern vehicles. Honda Accord (2014) did that same thing for my daughter a few days ago...and that isn't as modern as the 2019 Mini.

I have an 8-speed automatic. When I drive in sport-mode(all the time), I have to "restrain" my self from pushing the shift forward going from 2nd to 3rd. I realized that, that was a normal shift point in my manual trans, from 2nd to 3rd gear, forward and to the right. But obviously, in my CMS I end up down-shifting if I push the shifter forward (ouch). Muscle memory. Only mentioning that because all my cars don't require pressing the brake down to start. I think I just spaced out and wasn't pressing the brake down when I tried to start the car. Just kind of mindless... :-)

If it turns out to be a car problem, I will report back, but I'm pretty sure this was user-error. No problems so far...
