Computer settings by the dealer

Question # 2 for all you MINI owners.

I pick up my MCS in about a week and a half. Since the dealer is a PIA to get to from my house, i want all the computer settings set before I go home.

I told my MA that on delivery day, I want to go to the service area, have the car hooked to the computer and for the tech to go through every computer option and set them how I want.

I read through the manual and I am a bit confused on what they set, what I can set myself or both. Can I set everything myself or are there some settings that only the dealer can do?

So, if you wouldn't mind doing a bulletized list for all the settings I can expect to set, i would be very appreciative.

So far I have:

-Doors locking when driving off
-How many quick blinks for turn signal
-lights staying on after the car is locked for a few seconds

Thanks for your help.

Miniusa should have send you an email/link to submit all your custom settings for programming before pickup. All the options including DRL, locking, radio stations, etc are user programmable, so even if they didn't have it setup, you don't need a tech to do it for you.

yeah I would try to get those taken care of before you left. you never know!...just make sure your auto up works on both of your windows (close the doors first)

You don't even need a manual..

You can do it yourself directly in the car.

If you figured out by yourself how to change channel on the radio, then you should be good to configure the doorlock also...

Just remember, to be able to do the "custumization" of your New MINI...Congrats BTW...you will need to have the engine running, otherwise you will only be able to change the "Auto-Wiper" feature, if so ordered. It can be done quite easily too. Just find a nice Lunch Spot after you pick up you car and go for it!!
Good Luck!!

The R56 does not require being hooked up to anything at the dealership aside from your hand to change settings as desired. It can all be configured from the radio UI and/or left stalk. If you are not shown how to change the settings upon delivery, make a point to ask.

ah ok. If you guys say everything can be set there with the computer, then I will do it myself and note waste the MA's or the Techs time.

Just making sure b/c when we got my wifes 330i, i was pissed that i had to go back to the dealer.

Im a computer geek, so i dont mind messing with the computer to make the changes.

thanks everyone!!

Dug up the list I got from the dealer before I took delivery. In addition to the cut and paste below you can enable/disable the horn to beep upon remotely locking.

-When you lock the doors do you want the outside car lights to flash, Yes or No
-When you unlock the doors do you want your outside lights to flash, Yes or No
-When you press the unlock button once do you want just the drivers side door to unlock or passengers and drivers side to unlock.
-When you hit 5mph do you want your doors to lock, Yes or No
-When you park your car do you want your lights to stay on for 40seconds or all the way up to 240seconds.
-Do you want your daytime running lights on, Yes or No.
-When you tap your turn signal to you want it to blink one time or three times, I will be honest one time really does not give you enough time to merge.

So, to understand, we can either send this list in early or we can just make the changes ourselves after delivery, is that right?

Yes. This is a simple menu that you can access directly on the cluster

thanks for the clarification. It seemed to be written in the manual that every setting you could do yourself, but I wasnt sure. Our BMW doesnt let you do anything.

I would rather make the changes myself than have the tech do it.

I am sure I will be rather busy after picking up my mini with all the settings.

How do you do this? I think I got it set to "on" in the little menu but still nothing.

The items you want set are EASY, once you familiarize yourself with the manual.

HAVE YOUR SALES DUDE SET THOSE AND ANY OTHER OPTION WHEN YOU PICK UP YOUR MINI. I did.
Another item to set is the Digital Speed on the tach.

If you do not have navagation you will not have the mini joy stick. So you use the button on the very end of left stalk (blinker) to access the computer program to set your personal settings , the car does not have to be running but you need to push the start button with your key fob in ignition.
Then you need to get to " HOME " then NEXT then get to the KEY with check mark . Then you are in the personal settings configurator .

Good luck , took me awhile to get the sequence down hitting the stalk button and knowing what the little icons mean.

You can only get a sound on lock/unlock if you have the alarm system. Otherwise you just get the turn signal flashes.

Am I correct in assuming that all settings you make with your key fob, you will also need to make using the other key fob?

Yes, individual programing for each key-fob.

If your MA is like mine was, on delivery he will sit you in your MINI and run through the entire key program deal twice, once for each key.

Owners Manual does not go through the whole setup in that manner, rather each section will deal with one operation (like TPM or Lights or Locking etc.) in its own section.

I didn't research any of this in advance, but when my sales rep was turning over the car to me he just sat down, started doing it, asking me what I wanted as he went along. Navigating the system was a bit confusing to me at first, so I'm glad he did that. Just ask the sales rep to help you out - even if you don't do your homework in advance more than you have, this should be quick and easy for them.

Asking for the help: easy
Doing it yourself: priceless

Do I assume correctly that this programming function is a 2nd generation thing only? My 08 MCSC has no apparent button on the signal stalk.

It's just the tip of the stalk - it presses in. Easily overlooked.
