Alta folks,

How about making a hose that does not have the SG port. I would go for it in a second. That SG device has go to a very stupid extra unwant cost ever. I never heard a thing from mine except rattles !

Cheers.

That thing has been annoying me since day one. It's this drumming, rattling noise that sounds nothing sporty, but rather like something is loose in the bonnet.

Thanks for the suggestion. The reason why we leave it in the boost tube upgrade, is it allows for the BOV upgrade as well.

We will certainly consider though, a non-BOV port pipe though. Thanks again!

Interesting. I think on both of mine I just never noticed. I have another stock one in the bldg. right now. Might take it for a spin to see if I can here it.

Suggestion, Instead of using the stock SG plumbing to install a BOV on, why not make a replacement tube with no SG port and also a ABS plastic "T" that can be inserted by shortening the hose and doing the plumbing for a BOV correctly. Plenty of space for that and would make the BOV more effective and less complicated with all the extra crap in the way. Would also eliminate the extra rattles

From our conversation the other day via phone, that doesn't surprise me at all.

Have a great day! Chat soon!

ENGINE 58,
If you look at the attached diagram, did you just remove everything in the red circle and install the Alta plug where the blue arrow is pointing? Let us know. Thanks.

Does anyone have the specs for the hole that needs to be blocked off? I want to delete the sound generator, but I'm using the DDM intake.

TIA

Adam,
So if you remove everything, what happens to the hole on the firewall? Is there actually any air going into that hole or is it there to just hold up the sound generator?

The SG is mounted to the intake manifold, the tube is only there to vent air out of the SG. So no concerns or stress.

Adam,

Can you sell just the plug without the entire boost tube set? I too have insane rattling in the mid rpms

Yes we can! Just ring us or e-mail me on Tuesday or Wednesday.

I don't remember the MSRP off hand, but it is pretty reasonable.

Thank you!

Actually, you don't have to delete the whole thing. Look at the diagram provided by aem421. Item #13, the canister looking thing, is the Sound Generator. It has a diaphragm inside that vibrates from the intake pulses and makes the "roadster sound". No air passes thru it.

The Air Channel, item #16, should really be called the "sound channel", because its function is to channel the sound into the cabin. The reason that the "sound generator delete" mod came about is that, for late '07 builds onwards, due to an intake manifold design change, the ALTA intake bracket contacted the Air Channel, and it would not stay connected to the firewall. This caused a rattle in the engine compartment.

The simplest thing to do is just remove clamp #12, and remove the Air channel. That's it. There will not be a boost leak, because the Sound Generator is sealed. The Sound Generator will still make the "sound", but the rattle from the loose Air Channel will be eliminated.

If the "sound" is still objectionable, some foam rubber stuffed inside the Sound Generator will muffle or eliminate it.

An important thing that I believe people are missing.... the firewall port where the Air Channel connects is open to the cabin. This really should be sealed. Another piece of foam rubber, trimmed for a snug fit, should do the trick to keep bugs, fumes, hot air, etc. from entering the cabin.

I had the rattle from the loose Air Channel after installing my ALTA intake. When installing the ALTA cold side boost tube, I studied the Sound Generator, and decided to completely remove it, to make the boost tube installation easier, and also to eliminate the rattle from the Air Channel. I measured the port on the boost tube, and went to my lathe and machined an aluminum plug, held in and sealed with a clamp. This is the origin of the "Sound Generator Delete" mod.

I posted on NAM about it, and Adam investigated it, and discovered that the intake manifold changed slightly in late '07, causing the interference of the intake with the Air Channel. The original ALTA intake, designed and fit to an ALTA "mule", did not have the interference problem. Since then, ALTA has been supplying an aluminum plug for the boost tube, to eliminate the complete Sound Generator assembly, just as I did originally.
