R60 Huge clunk sound followed by smaller clunk sounds and grinding.
Huge clunk sound followed by smaller clunk sounds and grinding.
Hey guys, so a little back story and car info before I bring up the issues.
2013 r60 JCW All4 manual transmission.
I drove about 5000 miles from Alaska down to Oregon (yes I took the long way), in north Dakota I had a flat in the middle of the night and had to get a tow. The tow truck wasn't a flat bed, they lifted it from the back end and forgot to tie the steering wheel straight. I believe that's where the issue originates from.
Alright Now to the issues.
This morning my supervisor and I saw a small leak and were looking for where it came from. We didn't find it, but the leak is falling onto the catalytic converter that's just below the firewall. Then on the way home from work I was driving up an overpass and it felt like my car hit 2 puddles of water, as in it jerked back just like it would with a small puddle. And after that it sounded like a bad wheel bearing.
I came to a stop at a red light, and when I went to accelerate there was a huge clunk sound like something came loose and my cabin started to smell like oil or grease. Driving forward to get to a parking lot there was more clunking sounds, grinding sounds and the car felt bumpy.
I checked all the fluids and everything looked like it was full.
When I stopped there was no unusual sounds or vibrations, the sounds and jerkiness only happened when my car was moving forward even without any gas applied or the transmission engaged.
Luckily I pulled into a parking lot that will let me park there as long as I need to.

For a Countryman with ALL4, Mini states that it shouldn't be towed with just the front or rear wheels raised but rather on a flatbed. They don't give much in way of detail but simply state "the wheels could lock up and the transfer case damaged". Not saying that is what happened here, but it *might* help explain how you can still drive the car yet are having problems. I'd take it to the dealer ASAP and plan on putting in a claim via insurance or direct with the tow company for their insurance.
Perhaps someone else has a clearer idea of what is going on here. Bummer. Sorry.
