R60 One of those HID questions..
One of those HID questions..
If one was to install HIDs in the countryman, fogs and/or main, would they need coding?
I have a set of bi-xenons for the mains and a set of regular HIDs for the fogs. I think the bulb out warning comes on and it flickers a lot. I do have the cancelers installed as well but the problem still persists. I tried running a harness from the battery, but still does this. I just received the k-can cable today, just waiting for the weather to get better.
1. Is the coding for HID the same as 'disable bulb check'?
2. Where is a good grounding location for the harness/ballasts?
3. anything else i should know before tackling this?

Bulbs on mini's are run at slightly lower than "regular" voltage to extend their life and still get 99% of the brightness...all canbus cars are like this...when a car is coded...the voltage reduction is removed (done by pulseing the current)...the balast for a hid sees the lower voltage/pulse and puts the bulb into what is kind of a "warm up mode".....xenon's start at one voltage and is run at a lower one.....as I understand it...the error eliminator ( if made right) has 2 uses....it functions as a capictor....so tricks the car to not give you a bulb out warning....but evens out the voltage...to the balast for the xenon sees a steady power...not the lowered voltage (done by rapid pulseing)...so the bulb lights, warms up...then steps back to regular lighting mode no pulse......
One warning....
If you run you headlights off the battery with a relay....
It is VERY easy to forget to turn on the TWO switches so you will have taillights...have seen a few folks who have wired up headlights with alternate wiring....and thus have zero tail lights... Pretty dangerous.

To be honest, I would suggest NOT converting the headlights....
Putting a xenon bulb in a halogen housing makes tons of glare...and folks usually end up with LESS light where they want it....so you spend $$, get a "cool look" but end up with an inferior product. That is the hard fact. The entire housing needs to be replaced. Simply putting an even brighter bulb in the housing will not help....
Xenon's are ONE case where the factory option is a screaming good deal....aftermarket conversions are just junk at the best...dangerous at the worst.

I have done the hid kit in my headlights, they were flickering as well, but I used in line cancelers, and they worked perfect... I also installed yellow Hid's in my fog lights which as flickered, and was solved using cancelers as well

ZippyNH: Yes.. but we all know that we'll end up doing it anyways.. and thats where you may be wrong. Im not be fully right either, but when i had the HIDs in my fogs, the light output and throw was SIGNIFICANTLY better than stock halogens. No one complained, but got looks and compliments. I have yet to try the headlights, so cant comment on that. Others, I read, say there glare isn't as bad as one would think. Throw, I'm not sure.
n2000snake: I tried the cancelers, either mines are faulty or i had it on wrong.. I will try it when its warmer..
