MINI basically gives up one free oil change during the included maintenance period. In exchange, they are banking on additional business from the shorter OCI. My guess is they have data on their customers' buying patterns for oil change services to feel confident they'll make more money with the shorter OCI.

jcauseyfd is saying that during the covered 36 month period, MINI will have to do 1 extra oil change based on the recent shortening of the oil change interval, but that they will make up the cost later since people will have to get their oil changed more often and some of those people will be going to the dealer.

DneprDave, on the other hand, is mis-informed.

Has anyone had more than one free oil change in a year?

If they had the shorter OCI when my MINI was new, I would have qualified for more than one per year.
