Mrlucky... that old motor home probably chugged along at a max of 3400 rpm with a big V 8. A small 4 banger that's turbo charged and rev'd to 5 or 6 grand regularly ... I'm changing every 5 grand. Small money for peace of mind.

The inconsistency between dealers is unbelievable. I had my first pre-paid oil change done last week and I just noticed the service indicator is now back up to 14,000 miles. I was expecting 9,000 miles. It really does not matter since I'll be doing an in between oil change, it is just frustrating that different people are getting different info and results based on the servicing dealership.
In my case, this is the same place that was going to charge me for labor on the coolant temp sensor recall due to my CAI, so I'm not too surprised I did not get the updated service interval.

That's crap, I'd be talking to my service manager and pointing out that most of the other MINI dealers have new guidlines and he/she needs to get up to speed with them on oil change intervals. If they dismiss your concerns I'd call MINI directly.

Here is a 134,000 mile BMW engine that was likely maintained with the recommended oil change intervals:

I feel bad for the guy that picked up that mess.

follow the link in post #17 ... it says you're a fool if you change oil more frequently than the manufacturer recommends

then follow the link in post #29 ... this is what happens to the smart people that drank the post #17 koolaid

it's your car, the choice is yours

I'm thinking that's more likely from a "never" interval between oil changes, with an extended period of non-use thrown in.

I took delivery of my CMS 11 months ago and I currently have 7600 miles...the computer has me waiting another year (11/2013) or 7400 miles for service. I intended to pay for the oil change myself but after reading this thread I called my dealer...the young lady who answered the phone said she wasn't aware of a change in the interval but she would check on it for me. She quickly came back and told me 10,000 miles or 1 year (a year and a day, actually). Looks like I'll be heading there the end of next month for my freebie!

The one year and one day is from build date, not delivery date. Same for the two year brake fluid service.

everyone can do what they think is the best for their car...
if u want to change ur oil every 15000 miles or 1000 miles is up to u..
but for me i will just change it every 3000 miles like i always do with other cars just to feel safe..

Hmmmmm....Is that written anywhere? That would be different than the rest of the standard Maintenance Warranty which begins the date the car was put into service.

The brake fluid warning should come at the two year mark since it's coded on the car from the build date. That's how it's been on the BMW side since 1997 and I expect the R60 is the same. I can tell you for sure in about a year...
As far as oil changes, the car is programmed to trigger based on miles not time. I have never had to ask for a one year low mileage oil change so I don't know for sure. I assume some dealers would honor it based on build date and other based on delivery date. That would keep consistency in the inconsistency with which MINI and BMW dealers handle service requirements.

Speaking strictly as an automotive engineer and not as an enthusiast, the manufacturer's oil change interval is designed to maintain the vehicle through it's intended service life.
That being said, you may disagree with the vehicle manufacturer on the length of the intended service life...

Does anybody have some sort of printed statement from BMW or Mini that officially states the oil change mileage to be 10,000? I plan on talking to my dealership about this, and it would be great to have physical proof.

The only info about reduced intervals that I've seen has been here on NAM. I called my dealer because some people here had complained that their dealers were not recognizing the policy...I figured if mine wanted to play that way then I would start calling other dealers until I found the answer I wanted. (Fortunately I have 4 dealers within 90 minutes or so)

the window sticker on my 03/2012 build cms all4 says 10k oil change

but my OBC was set to 9k miles at delivery, but has counted down faster than the miles have accumulated, so i reached 0 at 8k miles

since then, after my dad's 09/2011 build cms all4 had an oil change at the dealer 09/2012 and they set the OBC to 8k miles until the next scheduled change ... the SA pointed it out when i picked up the car ... he said it was the newest oil change interval

my cms all4 is having it's 3rd oil change tomorrow (first by mini) at 8k miles, will see what they set my OBC to

as i said yesterday, today i had mini do an oil/filter change on my 03/2012 build cms all4

after the change, when i started it, the OBC shows the next oil/filter change due in 8,000 miles, same as my dad's 09/2011 build cms all4 after his oil/filter change at the dealer

so that's 2 N18s with 8,000 miles oil/filter change intervals

scott

ps, my cms all4 has not got any leaks on the engine or drivetrain

specifically, the oil leak from the engine block that is getting into the wiring harness, the rear differential and transfer case are all dry at 8,000 miles

My ol change was done a couple of weeks ago but the service indicator is back to 14k miles. More inconsistency from one dealer to another and I think I picked the dealer short straw.

That explains why my 2013 was set to 9,000 miles, or was last I looked.

I also highly doubt that 134,000 mile BMW was on the 15K changes, that's more like reagular oil or the synthetic at 40k plus.

I changed the vanos seals on my cousins 02 BMW E46 at 180K and the engine was spotless. She only does the BMW 15k oil changes. It was the same way on my 02 E46 ( bought from my cousin as well 15k oil changes ) at 140k when I changed my VCG, again spotless.

we've had our car for 9 months and only have 6000 miles on it. when we bought it, i mentioned to the dealer that we don't put a lot of miles on our cars and he said that we could take it in for the oil change at the 1 year mark as well. i guess i'll find out in a few months.

oh, my co-worker has a cooper S that had the turbo fail a couple weeks ago with only 60k miles. it was dealer serviced and they only changed the oil at the recommended intervals. from what she tells me, they said it was due to low oil. her argument is that it's always dealer serviced and was told only to change the oil when the indicator light came on. they're offering to cover 75% of the $3k bill.

We were in a similar situation (6900 mi, 11.5 mo old); our dealer said that we get the scheduled (free) oil change at the 1 year mark (several weeks early no problem). They did the job but did not reset or update the maintenance software.

I wish MINI would instruct their dealers to update the maintenance software to reflect the new 1 year, 8-10K recommendations.

the dealer will do an oil/filter change when the mileage is within 500 of zero (at my dealer), but anyway at 0 you will get an oil/filter change

the OBC countdown starts at 8,000 but it is not a straight miles countdown, there are other factors involved, gallons of fuel consumed (more gall = less miles til change due), distance of trips (short trips = less miles) and some say number pof cold starts

my cms all4 started at 8,000 and zeroed at 7,200
