Trouble Starting Cooper S

Hi Guys I'm new here living in the UK!

I have a 10 month old Cooper S Countryman 2WD with 9,000 miles on the clock (pic below).

A few weeks ago, all of a sudden I had trouble starting it from cold (like when the car had been left overnight or longer). When pressing the start switch, the car would fire up but then run very rough as if it was about to stall. After a few days, this got progressively worse. It would start, cough and splutter for a couple of seconds and then stall. Then, one day it wouldnt start at all - the starter motor just turning over and over.

I called BMW assist, and the guy came and plugged his laptop in and said no fault codes showing. He disconnected the battery for 10 minutes to reset the engine management computer he said, and then it started first time and ran sweet as a button.

It's been fine for the last 2 weeks, but yesterday it has again started doing the start, cough and splutter, stall again.

Anybody else had this problem? I don't have the fan running problem after turning it off, and in any case it only happens when the engine is cold.

Yup! Many people have this issue, mines gotten better because of the warmer temps... It's the thermostat sensor that goes bad. All you need to do is have it replaced and hope you don't get another faulty one. I saw a service bulletin about it last time I was in a MINI shop (about 2 months ago) so they should know about it.

Or it could be a bad fuel pump.....mine did the same thing a couple of times. Called the dealer and they said fuel pump.....turned out to be that the car needed a software update

The fan came on today both times after I turned the car off. Its only 11C today and it has never done that before - even in 30C temperatures last summer. I'm assuming I have this thermostat/temperature sensor problem then.

I'm about 90% positive that you do from everything I have read about the issue!

Car has been at the dealer today and they have confirmed thermostat is faulty. A new one has been ordered but its approximately 2 week wait so they are going to get me a hire car as they have recommended I don't drive it.

They are also doing a software update for the engine to hopefully cure the losing power under hard acceleration. They also found a small oil leak from the oil pressure valve. Can anybody elaborate on this? Is it serious? they said not.
