R60 Replaced Steering Wheel
Replaced Steering Wheel
Just finished replacing the stock steering wheel on my 2 day old CM. Replaced it with the all-leather w/red stitching (to match the Pure Red COlor Line interior!).
The replacement process took less than 30 minutes from start to finish.
Very easy to do:
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable (10mm wrench). Airbag you know.
2. Use a Torx T25 (or anything about this size) and insert into the hole in the bottom of the steering wheel hub. Press in and the air bag assembly will pop loose. Remove the single ground cable (press the small nub at the top of the connector) and also remove the 2 multi-pin connectors (1 for the airbag and the other for the steering wheel controls - if you have them).
3. Use a 16mm 6-point socket to remove the bolt holding the steering wheel on and pull the steering wheel off. Mine was not very tight. I only used a 3/8" ratchet to remove.
4. Transfer the controls from the old wheel to the new wheel (if you have steering wheel controls). There is a T15 Torx screw holding on each side control panel. Look at the back of the steering wheel to find them. The bottom cover is a friction fit. Just pull off & push it on.
5. Put the new wheel on the steering shaft. Note the 'index' mark. The wheel will only go on one way. No force is necessary. It slides right on when aligned correctly.
6. Put the 16mm steering wheel bolt back and tighten down, snug. I don't know the torque spec but tighten it with a 3/8" ratchet and it should be fine.
7. Connect the 1 or 2 multi pin connectors (they fit only 1 way and are not interchangeable). Put the single black ground wire on it's mating connector.
8. Align the air bag with the center of the wheel and push it on. It just 'snaps' into place.
Thats it.
