Are discounts really impossible?

Hello all:
I have a few questions and some observations. When i was shopping for my Mini, I only found ONE dealer in my area that would even think about discounting an 06 leftover. (I live in NYC and had to go to NJ to find the dealer who would discount) I went to a total of 4 dealers and 3 of them told me no go on a discount, only two were going to throw in "freebies" for trying to compensate for no discount ( one of them flat out told me no go to the driving lamp setup, the other told me maybe?) I'm curious, what have some of you been able to score from a dealer in terms of accessories? I bought a 15k 2001 BMW motorcycle and had that dealer give me well over 1k in freebies including labor and service, why is it so hard to pull this off with some Mini dealers?

Economics 101. Thats why. Supply and demand. Wait a year or two and they will sell like every other car.

Freebies.
  • Free extra key
  • Additional Warranty time
  • free fourth year of maintenaince.
  • free MINI music CDs
And worse, they wanted to charge me sales TAX on installation (for JCW). BS.

YarvisCooperS,

Check with Peter Braun at MINI of Fairfield County. They have some brand new 2006 MINIs that you might be able to work something out.

Discounts are not impossible. I got one in March/April 2006 on the S that I ordered.

MSRP on Rocky was 19600, he was advertised at 18900, and I got him at 18600. This dealer, at Houston Woodlands, was really moving his cars! Mine was registered in January, so he'd been sitting there for a while when I bought him two days ago.

I got the quote on Saturday, but when I picked Rocky up, the dealer also threw in floormats. I thought that was really cool, especially since it was a rainy day.

BTW, the MINI dealer in downtown Houston was *not* moving cars. My guy had about 6 cars when I bought Rocky, and the downtown dealer had over 30. People want the 2007 right now, so it's the dealers who realize they gotta drop their prices who will move their cars! I'd hold out and look around--my dealer was not the closest to me!

Best of luck to you!

Discounts are rare in the UK. Mind you this does help hold up resale values.

I would love to believe this about the Cooper S (about supply and demand) but these cars have been around since 2002 and I have been going into dealers since then and I have NEVER gotten one to lower the advertised sticker price. I have bought several new cars in my life and have always gotten dealers to knock off 2-4k off of the sticker, but not with Mini. (Maybe it's a BMW thing? Even then I would say, it can't be because I got a SUBSTANTIAL discount on my wifes X3, and got some decent freebies for my R1200c.)

Oh, they all offer to give your floor mats, that isn't my complaint. I want the driving lamps, floor mats, boot mat and the stripes! (hey, a guy can dream can't he? lol) With all of this anyway, it is still less than 1k.

Congrtats!

My wife is interested in an 06 convertable and the lowest we've been able to find is only $1k off. But there's less pressure on the convertables because they changed so little.

I heard you Min, my bad. I can see 06 cars being discounted. (and you got a GREAT deal there BTW) I also got my one and only dealer to discount an 06 S by $1500. But I was hoping to hear from someone that might have gotten an 07 car discounted. Anyone?

You can get discounts on the 2006 MINI's that are still sitting on the lot at most dealers.

As for that I don't think it's possible. As of right now most dealers actually have a markup on the R56 and you'll be quite lucky to find a MSRP dealer.

You won't believe me when I say that ONLY one dealer gave me that $1500 discount, 3 other dealers all tried to get the sticker price for their leftovers. It doesn't really matter at this point because I put a deposit on a pepper white 07 S the dealer had coming to him on allocation. (no discount BTW, but am promised some freebies like mats and bonnet stripes.)
