Worried with Braking In procedure

hey guys,
i got my car on saturday and well as of today i already put 650 miles on it.
I am very carefull with driving under 4,500 RPM but its Really HARD!!! i mean its tempting, Well today I was on the road with my friends Audi A6 3.2 06... anyways he basicly urged me to go up to 100 mph which i am reallly regreting....
i only went up to 100 fo lil while thogh

do you guys think it will hurt the engine?? can someone please make me feel beter i feel like i sholdn't have done that cause im not done with 1250 miles yet... but daamn it was asking for it lol.........

anywaysss it was wonderfull the feeling lol i can't wait for more LOL

anywaysssss i was only at i think 4,500 rom at 6th gear at 100
which i really think it wasn't bad but i guess im doing it slowly u know

oh man. that's it. your warranty is voided. game over man.

just kidding. doesn't sound like you did any damage at all. however, by discussing speeding on roads i wouldn't be surprised if this thread get's the boot.

you should not really do that kind of speed in an open road (assuming this was the case) , you are describing street racing, a no no! The minis best attributes are in any speed cornering, why not simply lead through some twisties assuming you have done some practicing ????????

Some people observe the breakin instructions and some DRIVE IT LIKE THEY JUST STOLE IT, RIGHT AFTER THEY LEAVE THE DEALER. I broke mine in "by the book" with my S, but am now happy that THAT'S over and done with. When I bought my car, i was told not to use the cruise control, nor to go over 90 mph or over 4500 rpm. I recall going over 4500 revs once or twice, but mostly at shift points and not during sustained driving. Even so, like you, I was worried. My friends calmed me down by saying to "not let it happen again until after the 1250 miles have passed"...not necessarily because it will kill your car if ya don't but because ya need to have SOMETHING to look forward to once the breakin period is over and you're just itchin to get goin.

The golden rules re engine break-in: vary your RPMs, don't cruise at one RPM for long (this is why no CC), and yes it's perfectly OK to go over 4500 on occasion, like the shift points. Just dont redline it.

If you didn't go over 4500, you didn't go over 4500.
If you did, the car will fall apart in a matter of weeks. Or it won't hurt it a bit.

See this, http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm, you broke it in when you passed 20 miles. I never "baby" a new motor and I have been breaking them in for 35 years.

Correct me if I'm wrong.... I think top speed is actually achieved in 5th gear not 6th. (4th not 5th on the MC).

As for the break-in period, seems like a lot of old wives tales to me. I nursed it a bit for the first 200 miles and have been driving any way I please since. At 900 miles the oil is still so clear it takes a jewelers loup just to read the dip stick. You can imagine my opinion of the early oil change during break-in. If there were something to get out of the crank case I would do it, but seems to me the whole point of an oil filter is to protect the engine from debris hanging in suspension in the oil. If oil filter technology is so backward in 2006 that it can't capture nearly all of the debris created during break-in, then long term we can all expect all sorts of engine problems no matter how geriatric we treated our cars the first 1200 miles.

Ours was broken in in Germany so it was a little tough to keep it at "American" slow speeds. The dealer said that the RPM was more important than the speed. And for those of you wondering, it handles just fine at 135 mph

But my new Mini arrived with 11 miles on the odometer, over half the break-in window was used up careening through parking lots at the factory and distrubution center(!)
