Is the roof rack made to stay or put-on-take-off?

I ordered a roof rack on my MCS which will be delivered very very soon. While at the tint/stripe place today (making sure they put the right shape stripes on), I noticed that the top of my car now has eight steel anchor-points for the roof rack. I'm guessing they'll put on the rest once the car is detailed.

Question: Once the roof rack is put on, is it a permanant part of the car? Or is it make for the driver to put on & take off to suit my aesthetic or bicycle-carrying needs? Either answer is good with me, since the Mini roof rack I saw at a Las Vegas dealership looks really sharp.

Thanks! --doug

The factory roof rack can be removed very easily, especially if you do not have something that spans from the front bar to the back bar. the bike carrier will make it harder to remove the rack, as you either have to take one end of the bike carrier off of the crossbars, or remove the whole thing (both bars and the bike carrier) as one big clumsy piece. But, with something like ski carrier, it's a 5 minute or less job to remove the rack.
