Not to be sorry. Happens to me all the time and I really hate it also. Especially big pickup trucks. For some reason they must hate proper sized cars (MINI's) and want you to know about it.

I'll often turn on my lights just to make them think i'm applying the brakes. This is NOT NASCAR people! Keep your distance!

You are not alone but I've had too many instances on this in the past 24 hours to share.

You don't want people to be too close to you? Is it a commitment issue?

I think part of the problem, for me anyway, is perceived closeness of the vehicle behind me.
I don't drive my Mini everday, but when I do it seems like everyone is ridding my rear bumper & when stoped at a red light they stop so close I feel my space being invaded {I'm shy}.
But I soon realized that not everyone could be getting closer than normal to me.
Is there something about the view from the mirriors of the Mini that make people look closer than they are?

I had the same feeling (real or not)
Just added the flashing 3rd.
I really do think that I now have fewer in my "comfort zone"

This is so funny...I have never had this happen to me. We do hear an awful lots of reports of this, though.

Its not real ... it IS a perception, the cars are NOT more closer than normal. You got no "trunk" back there anymore, just the window and the next car and hence ... objects appear closer than they really are.

Well I have them getting within 3 ft at highway speeds in the right hand lane, they got the ohh my back window is just too dirty treatment, five second following distance thereafter. I had another mom with child in the car cross a double yellow in a residental neighbor hood to pass me, I was doing the limit and this is a known speed trap, she gets past me then levels off at the speed limit pulls into her driveway about 2 miles down the road, her stunt saved her a total of 5-6 seconds.

All the time...

for example... while driving home today... this lady in a Dodge something-or-another was constantly changing lanes for a couple of miles and settled in behind me. As we approached the local traffic circle (strangle point) she found the need to disappear from my rearview mirror by getting so close, I couldn't see her hood anymore . After a couple of uphill roll-backs, she finally backed off.

The only thing you can do is keep a safe distance behind the car in front of you and brake sooner so the tailgaiter behind you doesn't have an excuse to brake suddenly or not stop in time. After being rear-ended a few times (none were my fault, other driver following too close or not paying attention) I've become a little paranoid, especially in the MINI. But not enough to NOT enjoy the ride

Use your left foot to lightly tap the brake, like flash the lights irregularly just to annoy back.
I'm so tempted to rig the rear washer to point backward and fill with WD40!

Lets see, WD40 absorbs water ... what will that do? Clean their windshield

Try some "Back to Black" ... that will do it!

You guys crack me up....I"ll try the washer idea..ha ha.
On the way home from school--it was a lincoln navigator--got a good look at her as she was up my b....I:impatient made a comment out loud about her being "on my tail"..well of course my son turns around in the back seat and stares at her....she backed off a little--I guess the little head staring at her at such a close distance got the point across....

WD-40 would probably melt the impeller in the washer pump. It would also definately contaminate the resevoir and lines. The washer system would be useless from then on. Changing out the washer tank and lines would be a ROYAL PAIN! The rocker panel and front fender have to be removed.

They aren't as close as they look to me either. I have PDC on my MCS, and it took a while to get comfortable backing up. The PDC starts beeping when you get within about 4 feet from an obsticle. The beeping increases to a continuous tone at about 12-18 inches from the object. At the onset of beeping (about 4 feet), the view out the rear window looks like I've already backed over what's behind me. It's an optical illusion. Objects in mirror are further away than they appear.

While I agree with you Rawhyde... they do appear closer in the mirrors and it does take some getting used to with the PDC... When I actually turn to look out the rear window (when stopped of course ) the only thing I see is the other car's windshield. They're so close I don't even see their headlights or hood anymore. Larger vehicles pull up close all the time b/c they're front is short and they can see over us. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, but it still unnerves me.
Way back in HS, we were taught to stop when you were able to see the ground behind the rear wheels of the car in front of you. The way people stop now, they could read my mileage... with my top up

I was taught tires plus three feet, not three feet up tailpipe.
