Actually, if you THINK about it, it was not an insult to the mentally handicapped. Saying a person of "normal" intelligence types like a "retard" would, in fact, raise the mentally handicapped to a "normal" status. So, NO, I did not insult them.

You didnt find her post a bit insulting? I felt like she was talking down like she was above him and like he wasnt going to read her post. If I was excited and put my first post here and people responded like that or like I've seen in other so-called "welcome" posts, I would be insulted and not come back to NAM. (which is actually why I am here and not on MC2).

All the capitalization notes were a bit unwelcoming but I don't think anyone meant any harm
. The laying into Flora I did find quite insulting & uncalled for.

I agree. Some younger people talk in a DIFFERENT fashion. I was talking about the huge blanket statement that she made. Some young people do talk that way, but to assume that just because he was young he would talk like that is an arrogant (and ignorant, in my opinion) statement.

The first one was definitely a joke. I agree. I just think the second post where the assumption was made was a bit insulting. It wasnt the most insulting thing ever. I guess I'm just tired people talking down to others due to assumptions they made.
And any "chill pill" comments should be forwarded to anyone who has a problem with his capitalization. If you dont have a problem with arrogant statements, you certainly shouldn't have a problem with the incorrect letters being larger than other letters in a sentence.

I hope Spike has not been scared off & realizes that NAM is really a friendly community
My last attempt at saving this thread from disaster-
True, Rally can get nasty, but I think he had some ground in his thinking here. (I initially interpreted the post in the same way.) He became offended and reacted, and once offended, the chill pill comment was just another offense to him. I think this was a difference in interpretation, I too feel that the comments can be taken offensively as I initially did, but I do not think that Flora meant any harm that she may have caused as she was kidding.
I'm butting out know and perhaps this one should be left alone.

Whoa! Stop! This isn't supposed to happen...
Since I seem to be the one responsible for this flurry of negativism, then it is only right that I try to ammend it. I cannot undo it, as the spoken word cannot be "unheard." Yes I was having fun, no I was not trying to make fun of or at anyone.
RallyMINI, I am closing in on fifty, to a teenager, that is "old"...
As for the deliberately misspelled words, how else would I have projected the pronunciation of the ebonic word. Am I NOT allowed to communicate in ebonics...is it ONLY reserved for the younger set ?
I have learned through many of my dealings with younger people who do speak ebonics, when I communicate with them in same, I am acknowledging them. Not implying they have a dimished level of intelligence and, in many cases, earns a degree of respect from them. They, in turn, speak "normal" english to me. It opens the door of two way communication with trust and acceptance...knowing that what they say will be understood, not be censured.
MINItor, I accept your opinion...no apologies are necessary... Ebonics is another American dialect which has its variations from coast to coast. Talk like a retard? No. I have had to put up with that argument my entire life...being from the NJ/NY metropolitan area. ("Pawk" duh cahr/"wawk" duh "dawg"...)
So, let's re-cap: I told Spike tickets are not good (who needs pioints on their license?), he could have been arrrested for speeding or other "suspicious activity" (cops do operate by profiling) or hurt (in an accident; if another kid thought he was challenging him to a road race or offended by a "challenge" not intentionally given.) I believe the rest is self explanatory.
Why did I respond in ebonics? The high school kids here, almost ALL of them, speak ebonics to one extent or another. The greeting tendered "What it is..." automatically made me think of a high schooler happy to have wheels of his own. I think my only mistake here was to assume that every kid in high school everywhere is familiar with ebonics and he was one of them. You guys are right. What if he dosen't speak ebonics and is totally clueless as to what I said? For making the assumption, I apologize.
And it seems that eveyone else is offended BUT Spike. So, Spike, what do you think? Mick

I agree that i came off too strong. And i apologize. It just really bothers me when people talk down to me and others on this forum without meeting us first. It's just a pet peeve, and I might have gotten carried away.
Flora, The apology above goes for you too. There has just been a recent influx of users teasing many of my younger friends on this board for the way they speak. From calling them stupid to just teasing, the teasers have really insulted a few of the younger users. I think that I went a little overboard when you responded with the assumption that everyone talks that way, and I'm sorry.
Sorry for almost scaring you off Spike.
Welcome to NAM.com. Unlike most other car forum sites, the majority of the people on this site are middle aged, intelligent, and not trash talkers.
wow
and to think i was just trying to say hi i'm not sure what happened but the ending was beautiful and i shed a tear or two. ok its clean slate time i'm 25 father of two husband of one. i speak relatively normal with a touch of what i like to call flavor hello to the youngsters, please pull your pants up and hello to the olders wisdom is worth its weight in gold anyway i'm here to hear and talk about coppers so bring on the car posts
and now for my first copper story
i drove my copper to work one day (the location and shift vary because i'm in construction) this job site happened to be very dirty and close to the potomac river so i would go fishing when i got off early. so i got off early one morning(5AM) and drove down to the river for alittle catch and release. i parked the car in the grass at the edge of a hill that lead down to the river and was catching some shut eye waiting for the sun to come up. i woke up just in time to fell my car sliding down the hill towards the river. it stopped in small level area that was 20 feet from the bank and 5 inches deep with mud. every time i tried to move i just slid closer to the bank. when i stopped trying i was a car lenght from the bank. so i got out and walk a half mile back to the jobsiteand when i got there everyone had gone home.so i got together some straps and a come-a-long(60lbs worth and covered in grease) and headed back to the river. it took me 3hours to get the car and i scuffed up one of the rims in the process. in the dark on my hands and knees in the mud, in my good clothes, cause i showered before i left work, wearing a $120 pair of shoes, covered with grease, armed with a cigarette lighter.when all was said and done i took my fishing rod out of the car walked down to the river, chucked the rod as far as i could into the river, then got inthe car and went home. this is a true story i have the rim and shoes to prove it. i hope that cheers everyone up, it sure makes me laugh

Spike you make me laugh. That was a great story, welcome and dont be scerd. The elders are wise and the hill have eyes, but the youngsters reign supreme!
Good to see you don't take things personally either, they can get a bit harsh in these parts.
Come check out the guy talk thread sometimet too, we really dont say much but we need more people not saying it.
