Recently got a 03 Velvet Red Cooper - just loving it. Back in the 60's I had a 1275S - still my favorite vehicle.
My 03, used, was obviously owned by a dog owner as the door pulls show a bit of chewing/scratching. The pulls being the metal vertical bars in the door panels that one grasps to close the door from the inside. Just cosmetic scratching, but would like to investigate some method of covering this up.
Being a university professor, cost is a factor.
Any suggestions?

Apart from replacing them, and you can get the part numbers and bits and pieces you would need to do that from realoem.com very easily... The best prices you can get will be from Classic Mini out of Ohio. The offer a 20% discount to people on this board. Tell them you want the NAM discount. Some MINI parts are not very expensive at all. So I would consider asking about the pricing, you might be surprised.

I can only say I have seen a rubber cover that someone sells to go over some of the 'oval door piping'.

Don't remember specifics however...

First congrats on the MINI. I drove Triumphs in the 60s, and I love the part about everything working this time. Have yet to lay on my back and beat on the MINI starter with a lead hammer . . .

With regard to the door pulls, go to Target and by a roll of 1/8 inch thick black shelf liner, cut to size, put the seam in the back and attach with scotch double sticky tape. Cheap, functional and easy . . . Voila!

Like the suggestions.
Was hoping that there might be an after market group that made a black sleeve somewhat like the one on the horizontal bar - not as padded but more for grip that would help cover the scratches.

It is good to be back in the fold. Did not realize how much fun I had had in the 64 Mini. This is a kick. After 37 other cars in between (Only three were US made) - nice to be back. This Cooper does not have the screaming factor as much as the 64 S did, but still fun. It goes up on the list as Number 3 of most fun quotient.

Have danced a bit with the BMW service folks over some warranty issues, but all in all, they are trying.

Looking forward to the first snow storm (maybe this week) to do a little slipping and sliding.

Welcome to the club! I had a 1966 1275 S in the early 70's; never noticed the lack of a radio! Still don't play it much in my 03 MCS.

You are going to love it. But beware, there is enough "British" in it to expereince wierd electrical happenings in some of the new ones!

Did you get the car from a BMW only dealer?

If not, save your energy trying to get a BMW only dealer to work on your MINI won't get you anywhere as they're not authorized to do MINI warranty work. You need to take the MINI to a MINI dealer for MINI warranty work. It can be a pain to do when MINI dealers are so scattered, but it's the only option for MINI warranty work...

They seem to sell the armrest but not the cover for the vertical bar and I haven't been able to find it..

 

I might have to get that once my MINI arrives, looks comfortable! I think that the hand grip comes with the armrest pair, otherwise they wouldn't mention it on that page, or they would have a link to the grip's page.
