Ours is now 8 months old, but she rode in the MINI very early on.
We used the Graco carrier. While the passenger loses some leg room because the seat has to be moved forward and slightly more upright, it is workable and we were able to take long (3 hour +) trips without issue. As your child learns to lift his/her head, he/she will be able to see you (the driver). Also, we have the sunroof. My daughter loves the fact she can see out on the left, right, rear and above.
She loves the sound too.
