Breaking It In!

Hey NAM Members,

A new MINI owner here. Time to quit lurking and start posting.

The waiting was over on 1/28. I picked up the Pure Silver MCS I had been dreaming about. Two weeks on the road now, and I love it. The iPod & H/K kicks out the tunes making the commute awesome. The hard part is holding back the bursts of speed down I-5. I'm only half way through the break-in period.

I was worried about getting the performance run-flats, but I find the ride very tolerable. Of course, I am used to a Ram 4x4 and a 43 year old TR4. By the way, the Ram is for sale if any of you in the Seattle area need an anti-MINI.

Only one issue noted so far. The hatch is picky about how I close it. It seems closed but sometimes the idiot light says no. Anyone else seen this on the '05s?

Just got past my break-in, 1381 miles!! It was difficult holding back, but I still haven't opened it up all the way yet. I'm waiting until 2000 miles to take it over 5500. A little overkill, but what the hell. I too have the same problem with the hatch. It kinda drives me nuts, but I just chalk it up to one the wonderful quirks of the mini. Enjoy your new car! I know I am!

The harder you break it in the better it will run , Of course thats MHO. I know there was another thread about this with a link to another web site with a write up on breaking in a 4 stroke motor. IF you did a search you might find it. Good luck with your break in though .

Yep, I've learned to shut the boot on my '05 fairly firmly. Like you say, it'll look closed but the warning light will be on.

Congrats on the completion of your break-in. I'm about halfway there.

The latch problem goes back as far as the 02’s. Swing by the dealer at a convenient time and have them look at it. They have a fix for the bad boot latch.

Beautiful MINI!!! The hatch issue does go back to the '02s, although my '03 has been fine, to date. Contact your dealership and get it fixed.

Mine has been doing this since 2002. My MA showed me a trick. Press and hold the latch, and listen for a double click. It should then close normally. He said it sometimes gets "out of sequence" and holding the latch 'til it clicks twice resets it.

The hatch thing bugged me for awhile but I soon learned that the car tells you when it is closed (2005...I don't know about previous models). The rear lights flash once to tell you that you closed the hatch properly. I like this because I don't have to SLAM the hatch to make sure...just watch the lights and try again.

Thanks for the tips. I will drop by the dealer, but with a 90 mile round trip I will try to hold off awhile.

I do like the flasing tail light feature.

700 miles and counting.
