Typical Newbie looking at getting a Mini
Typical Newbie looking at getting a Mini
I'm looking at getting a second vehicle to go along with my big SUV. I'm 50 and have owned sports cars and two door muscle cars as well as two door hatches. I really like the idea of a two door hatch that also can fill the sports car roll. The Mini S seems to fit the bill so I've been reading a bunch and looking around. The more readily available 4 door cars are not an option as I'm 6'4" and 250 pounds. The door openings are just too small to be comfortable/useful.
I know to look for either '05-'06 R53 or '13+ R56 due to reported issues that I've read. I can't seem to find which of these is "better" assuming comparable low mileage and proper care.
From what I've read I should expect some things to regularly needing repair. But, can't really narrow down what to expect as common issues on the two above options.
For example there is a 2013 S hardtop for sale locally with 43k miles for about $10k. This seems like a reasonable deal assuming all the normal used car things check out. However, it's not so great if I can expect to have it out of commission several times in a year and spend $3k on parts. I've watched many youtube videos on repairs and I'm quite competent to do most all the work myself. However, it's still a PITA to work on it all the time.
Anyone have any specific insights on the late R53 or late R56 on what to expect after ownership assuming starting with a 50-60k mile vehicle? Power steering pump and fan? Timing chain, tensioner, guides? Main seals? It sounds like clutches only last about 50k on these?
I've driven an '06 so far and liked it fine. But, it had 116k miles and I don't think I want to get those miles right off the bat.
Thanks for any additional info you might give.
BTW, the other option I'm looking at is a low mileage MR2 Spyder. It would probably have lower repair needs and repair costs. But, lack of power and almost no storage capacity.

Sounds like you know the basics and I will differ to others with more technical knowledge to answer the specifics of the two models.
You should be able to find a R53 with lower mileage if you have time to wait. I would say the decision should be based on which generation gives you the driving experience you prefer. The first generation is a little more raw and the second is a little more refined in my opinion. In my opinion, the first generation makes a better second car and the second generation would make a better daily driver, again only my opinion.
Time spent searching for a well maintained MINI and the time spent maintaining after the purchase it is time well spent.
