New member - 2010 Clubman

Hi,

I just joined because I got a 2010 Justa Clubman from a family member a few weeks ago. It ran fine, but I decided to change the valve cover gasket and spark plugs because it was leaking into one of the plug wells, and now the car is misfiring at idle. Been at it for a couple weeks to figure out why, including throwing a new MAF and coils at it, but to no avail. I won't call myself a pro, but it's not my first rodeo working on cars, although I'm new to Minis. I joined here so I can maybe gain some insight as to what's going on with the car.

I detailed the issue with the car over here:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-problems.html

And here's a picture of the car:

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers!

Steve

Welcome to NAM.

Hopefully some Gen2 folks can help you out. Some of us Gen1 guys are worthless when it comes to the Prince engine.

Welcome.

+1 on Checking in with the GEN 2 folks ... GEN 1 guys (that is me) I have no real experience with that engine. My neighbor had one and it really didn't have any issue, well except replace the plastic water-pump and thermostat housing (if it still has them)

Motor On!

Hi and welcome to NAM.
If it was running ok, before you did work on it, most likely something you did to it. Coils and wires to coils sound like the culprit!
Keep us posted!

No doubt it's something we did. We just ran out of things to check that that we touched when we did the original repair.

We had removed the airbox to get complete access to the valve cover, which is why we thought maybe the MAF got fouled. New vs. old didn't change the behavior, so that's ruled out. Same with the coils - new vs. old didn't change the nature of the behavior. As a precaution, we also checked the PCV line and rubber TB boot for any cracks or breaks. None found, but doesn't mean they're not there. We did also check the coil and MAF wiring to make sure there weren't any breaks in the harness that we could see. We didn't strip it down, though, but moving the wires around while the car was running didn't make a difference.

As someone mentioned earlier, it might be the valve cover gasket itself that didn't make a good seal, so next week we'll probably pull that apart and try again. But first, one of my buddies is bringing his ISTA laptop and a smoke machine to do a proper check for any leaks. If that proves unsuccessful we'll go ahead and pull the valve cover again.
