Used 2005 Mini Cooper convertible HELP!!

So there’s this 2005 Mini Cooper convertible with 140k miles that I’m trying to buy at an auction this coming Saturday 05/26. They’re selling it for $4400 in case someone wants to pay for it before the auction. My question is, should I go for that car or it’s a waste of money? I don’t know how good the mini coppers are with that amount of miles on it or if it’s about to die soon. Please help me.

What color, how many miles, what options, how many owners, where was car located, any accidents, transmission type, and are there service records?

Yep, need more info. If the top is all messed up, motor, cables, tear in top, etc then you will have to put some money into it.

Mine is nearing that odometer reading and with attentive care I expect it to go on for another 12 years (I may be a mumbling old idiot by then, but...). If this one has been taken care of it should be fine. Just a few things to watch for:
One thing to check as asked by one of the previous posters, if the gear box is an automatic, walk away. Pull the dipstick, if it's black sludge walk away. Also, ask to see the top run down and back up. It should run smoothly and with no squeaking then examine the canvas for wear around the back quarter for shiny and/or severe wear areas. Replacing the top could double the price alone.

Thank you for all your replies. All I have is this link

http://www.blokauto.com/2005-Mini-Co...-90248/6438451

I don’t know if that will help.

The car runs as far as I know. I went on Tuesday to check it out and I looks fine, the check engine light is off. They don’t let you borrow the car to run it unless you pay $200 nonrefundable but all the cars they sell are ready for use.

Ah, its a CVT auto trans, I would steer clear of it. Unless you do a 5 speed getrag swap. The CVT is always the "Great deal" MINIs on criagslist and ebay.

A Mini in automatic is tragic. Don't do it! If you can't drive stick, learn!

Wow i didn’t know it was that bad, thank you y’all.

There’s this other car too

http://www.blokauto.com/2010-Mini-Cl...-90248/6414263

I don’t know if that would be a better option(?).

Hello Julio, You seem to be at both spectrums of Mini. I think you may need to slow down and decide what you want in a Mini, then do more research on your selection.

Hi, sorry for asking a lot of questions haha it’s just that I’m new with this. I own an acura integra 95 with 220k miles but it’s been such a pain in my wallet lately and I have to spend even more so I’d rather get another car instead and I always wanted to get a Mini Cooper so I thought this could be a great chance but I also don’t wanna get something that I have to be fixing every 2 weeks due to failures or something. Idk if should get a mini or stick to something else since I don’t have any experience with them.

You can ask as many questions as you like, just don't you rushing in and getting something just because it's there. These are fun cars, but they do require you to be on top of the maintenance, that's why you should get one that you can spend more time looking over and taking to a Mini Mechanic before you purchase. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

The below thread was made to help those buying a used Gen1 but there are issues addressed that would apply to the newer models as well.

Don't buy a MINI thinking it will be easy on your wallet.

^^ +1, yes, I hear that all the time. Small car, must be cheap on parts. Then they want to mod it and its way more than there last JDM car or Mustang. Yes, its easier on gas than some cars but then people are like it takes premium gas? How about I run regular. lol. Its the same round of questions. I would buy it for the fun of driving and modifying. Not for a low-cost commuter.

Welcome.

+1 research, find what you want and don't be afraid of high miles as long as it has been maintained. And if it hasn't Low Ball a ridicules price because you will spend the money repairing everything they had neglected.

Best of luck.

Motor On!
