New Mini owner...

Funny how things turn out - I was in the market for a more sensible, grown-up car and had an Subaru Outback lined up, but backed out once I got around to inspecting it. I've had too many problems with them. Then jumped to a clean E39 540i 6-sp M-pack (yeah, a completely different machine, but I already own an E34 525i), but didn't want to pull the trigger too quickly as those can head downhill in a heartbeat (and was sold to the first bidder).

Then a 2003 R53 popped up with a price reflecting its need for some TLC... and remembered the awesome sight of a Mini cruise that I crossed paths with during the summer. So, out went 'sensible and grown-up' and in came 'ooooooo, autox car'. Checked off a part of my motoring bucket list with...

2003 Cooper S in Dark Silver w/Harmon Kardon

Pics here... just brought her inside after sitting out in the snow for a month.

Thanks guys!

Starting off with the maintenance, rear brake overhaul, ball joint and cosmetic repairs... but my OCD will probably kick in which will lead to sandblasted and repainted subframes, trailing arms, knuckles, etc. I really want to keep it 'stock' for the first year (at least in terms of autox rules) so mods will be a catback and some sticky rubber at most.

Rehab. Reassess. Repeat.

Welcome to NAM and congratulations. Love that color. One of my favorites. We have some great brake overhaul kits HERE when it comes time to do those brakes. They include everything you need plus additional items you should replace while you're in there doing the job. For when it comes time to an exhaust be sure to check out REMUS HERE. More than a few members run this exhaust as the overall sound and quality is top notch. Good luck and be sure to share with us when you work on your R53. If you need anything be sure to let me know.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have my own euro parts source north of the border... I have owned so many German cars that the guys at the counter know me and give me garage rates (although there are certain items that I buy 'down south' when I visit family).

Just got it plated... since we don't have custom plates, we're at the mercy of lady luck. Mine starts with P53... I asked, no "R's". Oh so close.

That plate is a tiny line off your R53. Take it you're up in Canada. These Mini's are great cars to drive and can be brought up to spec fairly easily if there's no hidden damage. Love the way the first gen Mini feels on the road and drives. Great buy.

Former E34 525i owner here also. Post up some pics when you get the mods done.
