Hey Guys and Gals,

I am picking up 02 MCS on Saturday, I feel like I got a deal it's got 37,xxx miles on it. I test drove it Wednesday and everything was tight mechanically. I will post up pics when I have them this weekend. Just wanted to introduce myself and say I am excited about my new fun daily car!

Cheer,
Jon

This may not be the right place for this, but can some one explain to me how so many owners of one car are so polarized on the reliability. For every post I read here or on other forums that states the mini is a lemon I see one with person that has had rock solid reliability.

Am I missing anything or is it just a crap shoot? I am used to ever car having it's common problems or weak points and I get the first gen has those as well. I just haven't encountered anything so odd with one make and model of a car.

This is my first German car so maybe it's just German thing? IDK.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Crap shoot.

Yes you can have the car inspected and know what you're in for, but at the end of the day the first gen's are now entering a decade or more of service.

As you have found the bushings and rubber are all needing to be refreshed, suspensions, balljoints, then mechanical/electrical will follow (forgetting about any surface rust you may or may not have).

The good news is, that if owners are up for it; it's possible to still do most (if not all) the work without having to go to a dealer.

With community sites like this, Facebook pages like mine, Pelican's technical articles, a Bentley manual and vendors like we have around here it's all very possible to keep them on the road... just add time, will, and money.

Welcome aboard and Happy MINI Motoring! Sounds like you found a hidden treasure. BMW does own MINI, but they are manufactured in Oxford, England.

Here are some great articles about the R53! Please let us know if you have any questions.
