Decided to Test Drive a Cooper S on a whim and....

That was the worst possible decision I could have ever made. I am completely infatuated Unfortunately, the one I test drove was Automatic so I didn't buy it. I've never been the impulsive type but wow what a drive. Even the harman Kardon stereo sounded good! Needless to say as soon as I got home I did some quick research and it looks like I should look for a Manual Cooper S between 2005-2006. My budget (8-9k) means it will most definitely be high mileage >100,000. How reliable are the Cooper S as the miles climb? Anyone here have a S with over 200,000 miles? What am I getting myself into...

I dont see why every one thinks you can only buy a 05/06. Find a mint 02/03/04 and fix the few problems they might have.

That's what I did and now I have a 35, 000 mile 02 with 260 whp and full suspenion. For less than whst most people spend on a 04/05/06 jcw.

Don't buy a high mile car. Most of our cars haven't been in the shop or been cared for. Superchargers are wear items.

There a lot of modded cars in the 200k club and even some 300k + cars.

Keep looking there are many 05-06 S's out here with good mileage, 60 to 80K cars are everywhere.

I have an 06 with 140K. The engine itself is solid, but look to change your upper engine mount, the hoses on the power steering fluid tank, CV joint boots, front wheel bearings, and fuel pump. The computer compensates a lot for the fuel pressure, but if you're looking to mod your engine you should change your fuel pump if the car has high milage. Check the Lower engine mount and control arm bushings as well. None of what I mentioned are high dollar issues.
One last thing, on a high milage S model check the condition of the SC. If you're going to change the SC save for a Sprintex, you won't regret it.

I drove my 2008 Justa about three minutes before buying it, never been in a Mini Cooper more modern than an early '70's before. Got it for 10K @42k miles with very minor issues like a front DRL missing and the panel surrounding it the wrong color. Everything else was just perfect and well cared for.

Keep shopping but don't overlook the Justa's - they are plenty fun to drive and a lot less complicated and cheaper to care for over 60k miles when the turbo troubles kick in,...
