John Cooper Newbie

Hello Friends!

My wife got a 03 MCS and after I drove it a little I had to have my own. I just bought a 06 MCS which also has the John Cooper Works upgrades.... Can anyone explain to me how the upgrade happened? Is it something the dealer installed when first delivered to the dealer or what?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.... still trying to figure out how this all works right now.

It's kind of like a strap-on. People bought their cars and weren't quite satisfied with what they had so they upgraded with a dealer offered kit. It was the only JCW option on the earlier cars.
Gen 2 cars have two flavors: Factory JCW which dives a little into the engine internals and the JCW kit for S cars, which is exhaust, intake, and software changes.
Others will certainly chime in with much more detail.

JCW investigation

Thanks for your thoughts, guys. The people I bought this Mini from did not seem like the kind of folks that would return to the dealer to soup up their car, and I believe they were the original owners. Just wondering when the JCW upgrades may have been made. I guess I'm just trying to find out what exactly was changed from the stock MCS and what were the performance increases that resulted from it. When I decode the VIN there is no evidence of the JCW info and thus my investigation. Is there somewhere I can find out more info on just what the upgrade included in 2006?

Loving my new car. I also have a 1995 SVT Cobra Mustang and actually enjoy the Mini much more!

Just to clarify the 1st factory R53 JCW MINI was in late 2005. 2002-early 2005 was a dealer installed option.

The JCW package included a new supercharger that I believe had ceramic-coated vanes and a smaller diameter pulley (13.8% smaller, if memory serves), compared to the standard Cooper S pulley.

It also had a different head which breathed a bit better than the standard Cooper S head.

If you had the full monty for the kit, it also has a special JCW intake box, which has a flap that opens at a certain RPM (around 4,500 RPM, if memory serves), which helps it inhale more oxygen.

Don't forget the freer-flowing JCW cat-back exhaust system, complete with shiny JCW chrome exhaust tips.

Last, but not least, was a JCW reflash for the ECU, to take advantage of all that hardware.

I think that sums it up... guys, let me know if I missed anything, or got anything wrong...

You got everything but the 380cc injectors were also added.

Thank you Braminator and others...

Thanks for the links to the 2006 MCS JCW review articles.

From them I am beginning to think that my 06 was a "Factory MCS JCW" with factory installed JCW upgrades.

Anyone know where I can find a factory issued list or brochure about the upgrade options for 2006?
