Need advice guys please give some

I have a 05 R53 jcw with 66k and a good amount of mods with every option except nav (have tech package) . I just replaced my SC as it froze up and the tech that did the work has a 07 jcw r56 with pretty much everything I have except panoramic roof . I do not track the car or anything of the sort but want a reliable car . The tech wants to trade me his 07 for my 05 and a little cash from me as he wants to start getting back into auto crossing and stated that he can mod the r53 more . I did a search and know the prince motor is not as good as the R53 models and everything about the steering . I do not care as i am not looking to mod it more and want more of a street everyday friendly car . Would you do the trade ? The 05 and $2500 against the 07 with around the same miles and mods ? Why and why not ?

Maybe it's too complicated to give you good advice. I don't know a lot about the first gens, but do you know how well the guy took care of his R56? Did he track it? Did he do the maintenance? (don't assume that he did) The 07 model year had a lot of problems, it was the first year of the new engine and things had to be solved.

But my biggest question is... why would you give him your car + $2500 because HE wants YOURS? If they are comparable on mileage, and yours runs well, why trade at all? And give him cash, too? Newer isn't always better, and there are a lot of people who prefer the first gens. What you aren't telling us is why you would want to do that at all... what do YOU get out of it?

JoanieB thanks for the reply .

I have 4k more miles then his 07 and every bolt on mod possible .
His car is a nicer color combo IMHO red/black mine is electric blue /black
He is a mini tech and car has all records mine was auto crossed he says his wasn't . Both cars sound great and run well
I use the car for my business and need something that won't give out on me and more street friendly

I also have had many modded cars and I always felt that turbo cars run better then SC but maybe this might be not the case .

Looked at Kelley Blue Book imputing available information and it appears that the 07 is valued $1700 less than the 05.

Maybe with more information, people will come and give you better advice now. A lot of people on this forum think that the first gen with SCs are more reliable, or easier to fix. The turbo gets so hot, and there are more electronic things going on with it, that when it does break, it costs more to fix.
That's a lot to consider, before you jump into this trade.

Hope you get more advice soon! It's always slow on Sundays, so just give it a couple of days.

I'm sorry. I was laughing at your "don't all answer at once" bump. Sorry if that wasn't meant to be humorous...

I would hang onto your current car. If you want it to be more street friendly, take that $2500 and buy some Koni FSD's for a smoother ride, maybe change to a higher profile tire. I'd never get out of my 1st gen and into a 2nd gen, especially if it was going to cost me money on top.

First gen reliability is just overall a safer bet.

And besides, I dont believe there was a factory JCW available in 07 (only the stage 1 upgrade)?
Is yours a factory JCW or stage 1?

Just some additional thoughts for consideration.

Don't....

The 07 has reliability issues and your 05 is simply a better car.

Yeah I was thinking that also to just put money into the 05 . It has jcw suspension and sway bars from HR .

what I think don't mean squat, but here's what I think

how does it feel to you?

You are talking about selling one used car for another .... a used car is worth what you are willing to pay for it and not one cent more

My GEN1 was in the shop a dozen times and the average fee after warranty was $1000 per visit

My 07S has never been to the shop 'cept for the maint' pre paid service

It IS easier to engine mod a GEN1 if you look at the pulley ... beyond that I believe things come together ....

This is why I am confused as this is not the first time I have heard exactly what you said .

At first blush, it sounds to me like the guy wants to make $2500 on a lateral trade. But I'm not really privy to the details.

What in the world does he have 'invested' in his car? The purchase price?

With what everyone says about the 07's and their issues, it sounds like this so-called tech is trying to pull a fast one on you. He may not be telling you about all the issues he's having and wants to make money on to of it just because "he has more invested" and/or his is newer.

I say keep your 05 and don't look back. At least this way you already know the history of your car and what to expect. You have NO IDEA what this tech has experienced or done to his car. Just because he works at MINI doesn't mean he knows them. Mechanics are a dime a dozen. He may have worked at Billy Bobs Roadside Gas Station before his buddy hooked him up with a job at MINI for all you know.
