Empty nester Mom wants a Mini
Empty nester Mom wants a Mini
Seriously considering a NEW Clubman S automatic. I intend to keep it for a long time.
Drove one at a local dealer and loved it.
What should I be cautious during build / purchase and where is the 2012 better than '11 or '10?
Thanks -

Big decision!
Make sure you drive a non-S version. There are fewer issues over the long run. (but I love my S)
There was an engine change between '10 and '11 I believe. MINI changed from the N14 to the N18 engine. They attempted to solve the chain tensioner issue, made a change to the VANOS system among other things. Many people are doing fine with the N14, but IMHO go for the newer engine if you have the $$.
Ordering.... The only caution is seeing just how expensive you can make it. Carefully balance your wants and needs. Now is the time to get anything that will be built into the car... turn signals, chrome, leather, etc. They really cost you later. I'm into cornering so I put all suspension options and the most supportive seats. I would not pay for upgraded wheels. You can purchase aftermarket wheels that are much lighter for the same or less $$ and you end up with the OEMs for use during the winter if you need them.
Only my opinions. Good luck with your purchase. My MINI has put a grin on my face each time I drive it for the past 4+ years.

I don't know if the 2012 is much better than the '10 and '11, but there are other advantages in buying new rather than used. You can order the car exactly as you want it, and get the full warranty and "free" service durations. With MINIs those seem worth the relatively small price difference between a new and a two year-old MINI, especially if you plan to keep it for a long time.
Go for the 2012 or, if you order one, a 2013. You get the advantage of all that has been learned and revised since 2008, especially the improved N18 engine: more power, likely more reliability.
I agree, and also the 11+ because they have the newer engine update and because of the reliability.
Just to add to the discussion -- ordering a '13 MY will get you Bluetooth as standard equipment, as opposed to the satellite radio in 2012. More info here.
The '13 will be the last of the 2nd gen models, so as suggested by others it would be the most refined model year of this generation. My advice would be to order a '13. GL!

Just curious... given you emphasized you're an empty nested, what made you decide on the wagon-esque Clubman?

Your nest is pretty full then!
There's nothing like a furry motoring friend.
I love my Clubman.
If I were in the market to buy, my preference would be to order new.
That said, if affordability makes a used MINI more practical, get the N18 engine if possible. It seems that MINI worked some kinks out of the N14.
My N14 S runs fine, but I am concerned about long term reliability.
I am getting both extended warranties for my car, as I want to keep it forever.
Good luck!
You will love driving a MINI.

Just my opinion..But, learn to drive a standard much more fun to drive..if money isn't major factor get a JCW or at least an S...the extra zoom from a turbo is a must..If you buy used make sure it's a 2010 or newer under 20k that way factory warranty is still in affect.

Our 2009 Clubman's seat back upholstery is not very rugged, so you would be wise to cover yours before taking your pooch along in it. MINI sells a pretty good cover that would protect against dog claws.
You might also consider the new 2013 MINI Clubvan, since it has a built-in gate between driver and "cargo." However, I believe it will not be available with the turbo engine. Your dealer will probably know now, even though the clubvan hasn't begun production yet.

My wife claims she loves her Clubman and told me that it was her first new car that she ever chose for herself. She said it puts her in a good mood when driving home from work, her MINI makes her SMILE, open the sun roof and put the windows down and drive 6 miles home. Her car is a year old this month and now has almost 18,000 miles on it! I say, Just Do It.....
Looks like I am aiming at ordering a 2013 Clubman automatic exactly like I want it.
Everyone who commented - thanks!
Now all I have to do is find a dealer who will sell it closer to actual invoice.
