lowering my mini
lowering my mini
i have a r53 and am thinking about lowering it i want it to look low but not so low i cant daily drive it and still b decently comfortable and also want to use my stock shocks any help or pics would b appreciated
There are many different springs available for the R53. The springs have different heights and spring rates. First you will need to decide how much you want to lower the car. I had my 03 R53 lowered about 1" with H&R springs using stock shocks and that worked well. I think that amount of lowering looks great. The H&R springs were a progressive rate which helped the ride. The stock shocks will wear out a little faster when using shorter springs.
On my 06 MCS I have JCW springs which lower about 5/8". The JCW springs are linear and stiffer than the H&R springs for a little rougher ride but better handling.
If mainly for looks and street driving progressive rate springs are a good option. You probably do not want to lower more than 1" to 1-1/4" because you reduce the suspension travel too much.
If you want to lower about an 1", look at the H&R or H-Sport springs.

If you want to lower about 3/4", look at the TSW springs.

If you have an 05 or 06 R53 than you have a slightly adjustable rear camber to correct the increased negative rear camber induced by lowering the car. The front camber will not change much from lowering. If you lower 3/4" you might be able to use the stock adjustment to correct the rear camber. If you lower an inch you will want aftermarket adjustable lower control arm (such as H-Sport) to adjust the rear camber more than the stock adjustment allows. Prior to 05 the rear camber is not adjustable on the stock arms so you will need aftermarket adjustable lower rear control arms.
