Keyless Entry Won't Work

I have a used 05 Mini Cooper. Since I bought it the keyless entry wouldn't work on either of the doors or hatch. I've tried to find some reasons for this. I found one forum suggested turning the car on then removing the holding the lock button and hitting unlock 3 times. I swapped out a fuse and did tried the thing to reactivate it. It worked for about a day and a half then stopped again. Any suggestions?

I've checked it at Advance Auto Parts and it registers a signal so I don't think it's a dead battery in the remote. I have not tried replacing the battery cause a.) I know they self charge when the key is in the ignition and b.) I have no clue how i'd get it open the key to even replace it.
