I've been taking quite a bit of razing concerning my choice from some coworkers and from my best friend (who can deadlift 800lbs, so I can't beat up on him) but I'm at the age where it doesn't matter. Of course choosing to have my stock racing stripes replaced with ones that have small paw prints in the outline probably didn't help as well as the fact that my other car is indeed a "powder blue" Prius (if you haven't seen Jeff Dunhams skit on the Prius, watch it)! I've toyed with the idea of coming up with an acronym concerning old, straight gun owning male MINI owners, but I end up just smiling and then taking Sj out on some curvy back roads and letting her strut! Of course I almost hit a cow the other week (it was in the middle of the road, I swear) but that just adds to the spice!

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, someone needs their self esteem lifted. Sorry not meant as insulting, but really, you are worried about what people think? OK, I work as an offshore Paramedic. No razzing from the guys I work with other than the "How do you get in that thing?" that we all get. Hows that for breaking the Girly-Man syndrome?
Get it and stop worrying about what others think, cause they will probably be thinking," Wow I wish I had what it took to own one."

Okay, I don't want to dominate this thread/topic but I posted just before leaving work and on my way home (my hand to God) I saw a big ole guy driving a Ford F-350 with a big pink John Deere sticker on the back window and pink John Deere license plate on the front. What kind of statement is that?

Aww, MCS Fever, if I even knew one, no, no make that half-a-thing about maintenance, I would've been the first to reply to your thread! (Hugs!)

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT buy a Mini.

You may not be gay now, but this car will totally MAKE YOU GAY.

I bought a Mini just the other day. It's a Justa, and I really like it. HOWEVER. As I was cruising down the street, I started looking at other men. I had never done this before. I noticed how hard and sexy their bodies were. It made me feel all gooey inside.

Then, I came out of work last night and there was this TOTALLY HAWT intern from the office standing next to my car. I didn't even say "Hi" and I totally started making out with him RIGHT THEN AND THERE.

My wife saw me doing this and packed everything she owned and took the kids and left.

Now, I have nothing. Nothing but my dead-sexy Justa and an odd quivering in my loins.

So yes, do NOT buy a Mini....all your worst fears will come true.

Agreed. Stop worrying about stupid **** and buy what you want. If you are concerned that your friends might be questioning your sexuality after driving one you need to grow up and so do your friends.

To be blunt, grow a pair.

ok thanks for the comments

Thanks to those who genuinely responded. I was looking for other people’s thoughts and their experiences when buying a mini. That’s it. Do not tell me that nobody contemplated ‘how will I look/seem is this car?’ when buying one, if you say you didn’t care that’s BS. Mini is a specialized vehicle that NOT ALL PEOPLE LIKE. It’s not as common as Corolla, Accord, etc. You don’t just go to a mini dealership to kick tires, you go in because you are interested in that brand.

If you insult me that means that you have to check your self confidence, not me. I am just politely asking for advise and for thoughts. I am not after anyone or trying to offend anyone.
But, if people think that it doesn’t matter what you drive, wear, speak, etc., well it does. I am not categorizing anyone! Just am interested in opinions of people.

I didn’t introduce gay into this thread. And honestly don’t understand what gay or not gay has to do with mini. Why posters here equal mini to gay? That means that all gay folks should love minis and I am sure that is not the case.

Don't worry about what others think. It's what YOU think. If you think it is a girl's car, that's your opinion and you'll still keep that opinion. But if you believe it can be a car suited for you, it will be. Just make it your own and you'll be happy with it.

I have a friend who is hetero and I laughed at him when he got his miata (this was before I got my MINI). But the things he's done with it (coilovers, exhaust, recaro seats, etc.) and the way he drives it was more than worth it. In fact, he likes driving that over his M3. He just says it's more fun.

My thought is that I place my enjoyment of the vehicle, fun factor, and practicality over what other people think. I'm definitely sure I've changed their opinions when they sat in the car (these people coming from M3s and porsches).

HTH. Motor on.

Of course a man can drive a Mini. After all, a Mini is one of the best modern day representatives of what a sports car is supposed to be. The classic sports car was never about horsepower and top speed... it was all about handling and manueverability. This is something the Mini has in spades!

Good Luck with your new car.

Mini + aftermarket exhaust + CAI = Manly (read ballsy) car.

Also, my wife got a mini....took me 6 weeks to get mine and I am just the tip of the iceberg. Many, many here started the mini buzz with "my wife got a mini"

It took me about 50 yards in 1st gear to figure out I wanted one.

Sheesh... The overwhelming number of people I meet don't even know what kind of car it is let alone a "chick" car!

Here's the interesting thing about the Mini: Take a look at most cars on the raod that are at least 3 years old and ask yourself "would you buy that car?" If it's a Mini your answer would most likely be "yes!". BMW has designed the Mini with some classic lines that just won't go out of style!

Exactly what is happening here. But then the girls are picked the MINI first!

Again, it doesn't matter what others think. If YOU want the car, then it is YOUR decision to buy it.

You asked a question that made you seem like you let the opinions of others dictate your decisions. Then when you get them, you try to sound like it doesn't matter. Make up your mind.

I have driven all manner of sports cars, both on and off the track... This is by far the most fun I have ever had with a car.

Funny thing is, the few people that did raz me about it, wanted one about 30 seconds into their first ride.

Hmmm,

Can a man own a MINI? Of course, but lets study the motivation for the OP's question. How about substituting a dog breed for the word MINI; ex., can a man own a dachshund?, or whatever __________. People "own" things for all types of reasons/motivations; form, function, status, practical, impractical, etc. The OP needs to examine his ego and answer this question for himself, introspectively, What do I want a car for, and what kind of statement does my car say about me to me? Others will have all kinds of opinions/reactions to whatever model of car you drive. So, be true to yourself and get the car you feel most comfortable with.

You say that its not a vehicle that all people like. The main idea here is that its your car, Do you like it? Yes or No, there shouldn't be any "Well yes, but i feel like people might look at me weird." Then don't buy one, this has less to do with manliness and more to do with your preconceived perception of societies view of MINIs.

Do you look at a man in a MINI and judge him?

Ha... I've though of similar things, too, since I'm so far from the [often incorrect] MINI owner stereotype, just because it would be funny, IMO.

I remember seeing not too long ago that MINI had the highest percentage of Democrat owners compared to all other manufacturers at ~70%. So there is *some* factual basis for some stereotypes, but having been to MOTD and been a member on here for a while, it's safe to say that MINI has an incredibly diverse ownership.

Funny that this subject came up. I was just discussing this with my wife and son. We see MINIs as asexual - anyone can own one. But the big debate was over the Mazda Miata. They say it's a chick car. I say it's too sporty to just be for girls. They said they'd shun me if I ever bought one.

On the same subject, I maintain that the only people I see in Pontiac Solstices are older white women and African-American men. BMW Z cars are always bald old guys. Buicks are for senior citizens. Vans are for women and although I often see guys driving them, they always look embarassed. Jetta drivers are usually obnoxious tailgaters. Prius drivers are always speeding thus negating all the ecological "good" they are supposed to be doing.

wheelie, methinks you missed a couple of subtle points, and made one big-a** assumption.

First the assumption: that everyone has pondered your dilemma when buying their own MINI. I, for one, never gave it a thought. it wasnt even a blip on the radar screen. I have no insecurities about most things, especially my sexuality.

Which brings me to my second point: what you perceive as insults to you have nothing to do with self-confidence. The remarks were merely various ways of saying buy what you want and who cares what anybody else thinks. The fact that you are so worried about what others will think about your choice of car speaks to your self-confidence, not anyone else's.

So, I will reiterate what others here have said. Buy what you want. If you have that much disease regarding what others think of what you do, take the safe road and buy that civic/accord/corolla/camry. No back bone or thicker skin come with a MINI. You have to supply those on your own.
