Check engine light on new Mini
Hi Marc...
not enough info....
There are a zillion things that can throw codes, and they all tell you that they are happening via that little dash light. Get a scanner if you want to get more information. There is no way to guess without either scanner info, or some change in how the car runs, or preferably both.

Yep...what year do you have? Is it a Cooper or an S? Did you scan for codes? If so what are they (if not, get thee to a Pep Boys/AutoZone/whatever, they will scan for free, write them down and come on back)? Are there any other symptoms besides the lights?
Also the 'Passenger airbag' light came on upper panel.
What a pisser!!
Any ideas?

Marc - that is a pisser. The previous posts are correct regarding the engine light...get codes. I had the same passenger seatbelt light come on in my car about a week after I got it and had to take it in. They replaced a sensor and it hasn't done it again. Not sure if anyone told you but MINIs have idiosyncrasies. We've had four of them and no two function exactly alike. Our 2008 won't allow you to operate more than one toggle without reversing the toggle first selected. So, if you toggle the driver's window down and then the passenger's window the driver's window goes back up etc. You also can't open the sunroof if the car's been sitting in the sun until you drive for a minute or so. None of our other MINIs have ever "acted" like that...but each has had a unique "glich". Good luck. It'll all work out...and fellow MINI owners are the best.

The dealer said that 95% of the time the check engine light has to do with the gas cap not being put on correctly.
Not in my case. It was a faulty o-ring that helps control evaporation from the gas tank. The o-ring was crushed during the original construction of the car. Fortunately I got the maintenance package so it didnt cost me a cent.
The passenger airbag OFF indicator light seems to have been triggered by my putting my laptop bag on the passenger seat. The sensor thought it was a small child and automatically turned off the airbag b/c they can be dangerous for them.
