Air Filter...

Hello, I'm new here and quite new at car maintenance in general. I bought a new air filter because I believe the time has come to replace my air filter (there is a bit of a hamsterish smell happening..)
I don't know how to go about changing it. My boyfriend couldn't locate the filter under the hood, but I heard something about it being behind the glove compartment somehow?
Anyway, it's an '05 Mini Cooper. I hope someone can offer some assistance. I'm sure I can do it with some basic instruction, I would really appreciate some help if it's out there

I believe it's the cabin filter, but as I said before; I really am new at this. Hopeless really. I went to an auto supply store and bought what came up in the system under air filter (for an 05' MINI Cooper).

Hmm...then there's a chance you got a(n engine) air filter. At auto parts stores, "air filter" means for the engine. Cabin air filter would be the keyword for what you're in need of.

However, you may not be entirely out of luck. If the guy at the counter had more than 3 brain cells AND you described why you needed the filter ("hamsterish smell" coming from your A/C), he could've put 2 & 2 together and sold you the correct part.

Thanks so much! Now I have pictures to go by AND I know that there are two air filters involved in my car. You guys are lifesavers.

This is my first time turning to an internet forum for any kind of help. Had I known people were so helpful I would have taken the chance a long time ago, thanks again.

the cabin filter is a rectangle about 16 inches long and 4 or 5 across

for a "just a Cooper" the engine air filter should have the shape of the air box, number 5 in this picture
