Burning smell coming from engine compartment?

Hi everyone, My name is KJ, and I've just signed up. I recently brought an '06 MCS with 26K miles. Yesterday for the first time I smelled something like possibly the brakes burning. I was not driving with them on. What might my problem be?

My 03S was smelling funny under the hood. It turned out to be the power steering reservoir was bad.

I have had a similar smell comming from under the hood on the Drivers side. It only occurs occassionally and it seems like it has always been cold out when it happened. I have searched for something electrical that might be fried and nothing obvious is visible. The last time it happened it smelled so much like friction material that I concluded it is the clutch. Only 5 K miles on my '08 Clubman and I don't exactly ride the clutch so on mine it could be a defect.

sounds like the clutch, and it (and the dual mass flywheel, which cannot be turned) should be covered under yr remaining warranty. If no warranty, consider a heavier duty cluch setup like Clutchmasters, because the MINI clutch has a VERY spotty reliability and quality record--and costs just under $3K to replace (with the dm flywheel.)

My drivers seat seat heater wiring fried and burned a hold in the lower backrest.... Add that to the possibilities list....
