Navigation for 2009 Mini Copper S
Does your dealer have a car with it for you to test out in person?
There are some videos around showing basically how it functions. This video was one of the key reasons I chose the OEM Nav.
The system is not perfect, but it is one option I would never be without. There are a lot of threads about it's pros/cons.

I'm not sure on the sound system. www.NewMiniStuff.com has a harness that lets you put a back up camera into the Nav screen. It's expensive though.
It gives you info on your location and can find business addresses fuel stops stores etc (However some of the addresses are wrong and the nav will take you to that street address). System most of the time will give you notice of turns well in advance but on ocassion it has told me after the fact (on a round about) It missed my Turnpike exit and wanted to take me the long way home. BTW one of the neat things is if you take a wrong turn it automatically recalculates the route for you. You need to read the book on it as it is a bit difficult to use and learn while your driving. Ive only had mine 2 days and havent read the book yet. Its a nice option if you can afford it. As navigation systems go you could buy a garman for about $200. that would do the same thing.

You get a better display of Ipod, car info, fuel gage, than what is on the standard vehicle, Mini offers a back up camera, I didnt get it but could see a use for it now on my clubman. The maps seem pretty accurate and you can change the view of how much detail you can get.

I added it for all of the functions Mr. Ray listed, plus I liked the look of the spedo w/Nav & don't like constantly having to hide my garmin (and the holder). Figured my my wife will get my garmin unit, so a win-win.
I believe I describe the other features. My comment about the Garmin was an alternative to spending the $2000. The navagation part of it is the same on both units.
Not really the same since the Mini OEM Nav has dead reckoning. Some Garmin's have it (7200 for example). Since it is nearly discontinued you can find it at a decent price. But you still need to have the dr cable installed in the car.
Thanks for the link, Ive only used the portable one for a short time guess not enough to notice a difference, what does "DR" do.
The Wiki page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_reckoning
Basically it uses sensors on the car to determine if you are moving forward or backward and if you've made a turn. It uses the speed from the speed sensor driving the speedometer.
It does that anytime it might not have a satellite lock.
