Hello all!

Looking for some advise here. I bought a preowned 2002 MCS a few months back with 56,000 miles. The car is in immaculate shape, and it's a blast to drive. Lately I've noticed that the clutch pedal feels like I'm stepping on egg shells; kind of a crunchy feel when depressing the pedal. The car shifts fine into all gears, and there's no indication of a clutch problem. I recently changed the slave cylinder, thinking that may be the cause, but the pedal continues to give me that crunchy feeling when its depressed; so now I'm thinking master cylinder. Anyone had anything similar happen?

As to my opinion of the crunchy-ness, I have no idea but the things that I would look at are...

1: The linkage from the clutch pedal to the master cylinder.

2: Bushings on the pin that the clutch pedal pivots on.

3: The throw out bearing fork pivot point on the transmission.

I am the original owner of a 2004 MCS with 75K and know exactly the sensation you describe. I complained about it while the car was under warranty and was told 'no problem found.' I am fairly certain that it is the throw-out bearing and/or throw-out fork. Unfortunately it will cost somewhere between $1,000 and $1,500 to replace those parts, given the extensive labor involved. I would love to be shown that there is a cheaper fix, but no one has come up with it yet, and I have yet to see photographs of the involved parts to confirm my belief.

 

How many miles did you have on the car before you had the work done? And, did you have just the throw out bearing and fork replaced, or did you replace the entire clutch components?
