Not really. I can't remember if VMWare Fusion has an installer or not, but most Mac apps get installed by just dragging the app to the Applications directory. I haven't had nearly the same luck installing things in linux.

VMWare Fusion on Mac does have an installer you have to run. It needs to install some kernel extensions to enable the networking support for running a VM (so it'll need admin access and will prompt you for an admin password). Other than that it's pretty much plug and play. When you launch it, it will guide you through getting the Windows installer started.

There is also an application that will allow you to migrate an existing Windows machine to a VMWare appliance. I have not used that.

I did use a bootcamp partition, but no longer do. I do have Time Machine ignore my Windows virtual machine file so it doesn't back up several GBs every time I run Windows. I manage the Windows backup separately (I just copy the VM to an external disk now and then).

The relationship I was thinking of is their common UNIX based origin. Although, I'm not a programming expert the command systax still seems pretty similar, but the MAC is pretty elegant. Any time if I need to buy hardware and it says UNIX or MAC I can run it without any problems. The application install process on Linux isn't as refined as in the MAC, but I don't mind tinkering with it - it's like working on an old car - you never know what pops up!

Did anyone have a favorite clay bar? I don't recall if one was listed in our previous discussion.

I'm not too picky about it. I usually just get something not too expensive from Autopia (use SAVEHUGE30 coupon code for 30% off).

Gee I go away for a few weeks and the Week 32 Mini thread has turned into a computer thread!!

Have been focusing on other things lately and just haven't checked in... then the NAM board stopped notifying me about 10 days ago.

Still loving blue Bernard! No more problems after the power steering fiasco. Rolled over to 4K miles yesterday!! How's everyone else's mileage? Roadtrip, I think you're going to go over warranty soon with all the trips you've been on!!

I'm at 3500 miles. The car is at in service to get reprogrammed. It has been glitchy..one day the rear defogger didn't want to come on. Another day it didn't recognize my iPod on the adapter, nor that my iPhone was paired with BT. Then the left window got flakey: one touch up didn't work and the 1/4" dance when opening/closing the door stopped. Most recently, it forgot my settings for DRL, signaling, etc.

Anyway I have a Justacooper Auto as a loaner. But I'll get the latest software as a result.

Do they have any idea why the software was buggy?

No, and I don't think they will. They'll just reprogram it and call it a day. That's OK with me if that's all the solution I need.

I guess I'll just have to see if ours does the same!

Mac vs. Windows

Funny where this thread has gone. There's a thread somewhere on NAM about MINI and Mini owners who are also Macintosh users.

I use windows at work (no choice, but it works pretty well and we have terrific support). But... I've been a Mac user at home since about 1985. My first Mac was the orignal MacPlus... and I've upgraded about every 4 years ever since. I have a 20 inch iMac desktop now, and plan to add a low-end MacBook in early 2009. Love that OS, through all it's changes over the years.

It seems that Macs and MINIs both appeal to a certain type of person. I think it's people who care about form and function, and dare to be a little different. What do others think?

Coming up on 2600 miles here. Just daily driving now... and probably through the winter.

Our first two computers were Macs then we rode the PC wave for a while. After buying all of our kids Apple laptops, I was surprised by one for Christmas last year. Love it and am enjoying being back in the Apple fold again. There are a couple of things that I can't do and that chaps me.... library books online and my Garmin handheld mapping gps program are the main ones though they may have come up with a Garmin Mac version in the last 6 months.

Garmin's Roadtrip software for Mac is free. I use it with my Nuvi, but I don't know if it's right for the handheld or not.

I bought another Mini - an HP Mini 1000, that is. It's a nice looking (but low powered) netbook, mainly for surfing the web. The great thing is that it is 2.5 lbs and compact. I loved the netbook so much I went ahead and bought another - an MSI Wind, which has a 160gb HD while still being 2.5 lbs. and SMALL. With that one, I plan to dual boot Windows XP (which comes standard) and Mac OS X (fully legit license, of course). Then I will have a tiny 10" laptop that has a huge HD and dual boots into XP for remote access to work, and OS X to play with (never having deeply used a MAC OS before). Guess what I'm going to do during holiday time off?

gbsim - did you ever get reimbursed for expenses incurred from Mini? I think you mentioned you were going to claim for some travel expenses. I don't recall if you posted on that.

Put on my "snow tires" yesterday. They're Nokian WRG2 which are technically all-season tires that also act as snow tires. I had to get them in 215/45/17 vs my stock RFT 205/40/17. I can't believe how different they ride. With the runflats, I can feel every crack, bump, nook...anything in/on the road. Not so much with these tires. I haven't gotten to try the performance out yet, though they felt great in the rain this morning.

I'm just so glad Phantom has just plain old all-season tires on him. They feel great, and have performed well so far. I expect them to perform well in the winter weather, too.

Finally expect to have a "decent" weekend here - temperatures in the 40s and no precipitation, so Phantom will get a bath for the first time in over a month. I think I'll go to a DIY place, take my Prima products, and use their water.

PhantomMC - We turned 4500 miles this week... Our Mini is my wife's daily driver plus we've been using it for the weekend errands.

RaceTripper - Sorry to hear about the electronic gremlins. The reprogramming should do the trick.

Tu13es - Snow Tires... We've got the All Seasons, but if we lived up there, we'd get the snow tires too. We have a friend in Omaha, NE and he just put snow tires on his new JCW. They get more snow and freezing rain than we do.
