engine damage from standing water

I have a 2007 Mini S that suffered engine damage from crossing a puddle. During a heavy rain I crossed a puddle of about four inches deep at low speed. The car stalled and was pushed out of the water. As I was stalled at least 50 other cars passed with no difficulty. I did not attempt to restart the car. The Mini dealer states the engine is a total loss and will cost 8078 to replace. Mini will not cover of course. I have read of other similar reports citing poor placement of the intake. Mini states this was previously a problem but was corrected in 2003. Seems to still be a problem. Any similar stories? 8078 for an engine?

Did you check with your insurance company to see if they would cover it?

Does $8078 for an engine seem excessive?

Ask for a breakdown estimate if you think it's too much (parts+labor). You can see exactly what they think they'll have to do and argue what you don't think needs to be replaced/done, etc. I'm sure a lot of it is labor, at a MINI dealer it'll be upwards of $100/hr.
But.. your insurance should cover it, and they may fight with your dealer/MINI over it. Best case they work it out, worst case you pay your deductible and still don't have to hassle with it.
