Blanked out license plates??

I guess I'm stupid or something but why do people blank out their license plates when they post pics of their cars? Witness protection?

Unless it's personalized, it's not worth the risk to show them off. I blank mine out because I like playing with photoshop.

Anyone can take your liscence plate number to the DMV and for a few dollars get your home address, If, along with your pic, you list that you have a cool stereo, or some great aftermaket parts, or whatever else theives might want, you just provided them with where the car will be for them to steal it.

Of course, I also post details of my Smith & Wesson security system, my NRA membership, and the fact that I'm in a community watch that takes turns on sniper duty.

Truly - some of us are fortunate enough to live and park in areas where this just doesn't matter - but if I lived in an area where it DID matter, I'd either (a) blank my plate or (b) move (more likely). Lotsa good jobs (and schools) in parts of the country that never see cars sitting around with the wheels gone...

I've never worried about posting the plates on my pics. I've noticed the DH is now blanking them out though. Many valid points made as to why some are doing it.

No one mentioned having the Trunk Monkey Security System.

Do a seach, it's funny. I'd post pics, but the DH is on the other computer playing in his forum. I've stored several pics of the Trunk Monkey just for laughs. I think I've posted one on this forum somewhere that we used PhotoShop with and have the monkey is the DH's GT500 truck. Some local dealerships are now running commericals using this idea to get a laugh.

Not true everywhere. You can't do that in CA anymore.

That's why I keep a piece of cardboard attached to my plates when I'm out driving. I figure you can never be too careful.
