Towing Question

I have 06 Mini Cooper with 5sp manuel transmission. When I flat tow it behind my motor home I turn the key halfway to the fully on position to unlock the steering and to keep from draining the battery on long hauls. At times the key slips back to the lock position while towing. Is there a fuse or something I can remove to cut the power drain while keeping the steering unlocked as I would rather not install a battery disconnect.
