Ride # 3 - Steamboat Springs and Vail Loop
Steamboat Springs Loop
200 miles of beautiful Colorado scenery greet you on this round-trip ride. From Copper Mountain, head east on I-70 to the Dillon / Silverthorne exit, then go N on Hwy 9. Enjoy the beautiful Green Mountain Reservoir then the quaint little town of Kremmling, CO. Leave early and go to Kremmling for breakfast at the Big Shooter Coffee, at Our Family Kitchen or at the Moose Cafe, the local hang. Settled in 1884 alongside the muddy creek, it was originally a trading post but by 1906 had become a railroad stop. Considered the Sportsman's Paradise of Colorado, Kremmling is home to fishing, hunting and trapping and draws outdoorsmen of all types. Leaving Kremmling, head west on Hwy 40 and follow the route over Rabbit Ears Pass (9,426 ft) and thru the Routt National Forest, then down the hill into Steamboat Springs. Enjoy the ride thru downtown and to the far end, then turn around and come back, being sure to buzz by the ski resort on the way. www.steamboat-chamber.com While in Steamboat, go for a late breakfast or an early lunch. There are more than 70 restaurants to choose from so head downtown, turn left a block or two, and troll along the river. Many of them are right there. We will provide you a full restaurant listing. Saturday events in Steamboat include the the Triple Crown Sports Adult Summer National Softball Championships and the 4th Annual Beaux Arts Festival during the day. Also, the SS Pro Rodeo Series is running this weekend.
After Steamboat, return southbound on Hwy 40, turning right on CO131 just south of town and head towards Vail, 90 miles away. Continue southbound until you hit I-70 again (you are west of Vail) then go eastbound past Avon, Beaver Creek and Minturn (a GREAT place to lunch) to Vail city limits. Unless you need to stop (there are 3 - east, mid and west) continue eastbound up and over Vail Pass (10,400 ft) then down the hill right to Copper Mountain Resort. CMR is only about 20 minutes from Vail....
Estimated route time and distance is 4+ hours at posted speeds, 200 miles. 3 ski resorts (not including Copper) and 1 quaint western trapping town.
Want a little fun? Run the route in reverse. Go to Vail first for breakfast, then back to Dillon for lunch....at the Colorado BBQ Championships.
