I CAN FINALLY HEAR!!

Just put in some JL TR650-CXI and TR350CXI in the front and WOW what a difference. This is with the Crappy Boost system too. I may just wait a while longer now until I get the COJONES to do the back!

So, just switching out the speakers makes a big difference in sound?

Yes it does. I replaced my stock boost speakers with some Polks and the sound is much better. So good, that I decided to stop there (for a while) and put my money into other mods.

Thanks. I'm going to look into some options...

I've always been impressed by JL, so probably headed that route.

The swapout was not too hard. The speakers I got online for under 200.00

Can anyone recommend some good speakers to replace a regular Boost system? Focals are a bit on the expensive side, but i'm looking for better sound. Eventually they'll be driven with either a JL amp or an American Bass SQ480 that I have lying around.

Specific speaker models would be great!

I tossed super-cheap Sony 2-ways in mine to keep the upgrade under $100.00. It doesn't sound like a "great" stereo, but at least now I have some definition from the highs and some punch from the bottoms. The paper-coned garbage that came stock is an embarrassment.

FWIW, the rears aren't as hard as it seems, there's just a ton of clips and retainers to work through. The benefit is well worth the effort.

Oh, i'm actually saving up for the whole dynamat, dual amp, custom box, speaker replacement, etc I just wanted to get a move on with the speakers seeing as how they're going to be the first to be changed.

Also, anyone know if someone makes the clips for the speaker connectors, that way I don't have to cut cables? (I find it better to keep things "stock-ish, it makes dealers not look at you funny)

If you search for the exact model # the size will come up. But to answer your question, 6.5 inch and 3.5 inch.

Never done anything like this. Once I remove the old speakers, do the new ones mount right in without any special adapters or fittings?

Sorry for the ambiguity. I plan to just do the fronts for now.

I've got my rear covered; now thinking about the front.
I've got a bunch of questions:

1. Did you bypass the crossovers? Are they separate or part of the speaker? The MINI HIFI has crossovers in the amp. I've been told that having two crossovers in series can give unpredictable results.

2. What did you use to pry off the door panel? How difficult was it? Any caveats or tricks?

3. Did you do anything about the tweeters? Did you leave the stock tweeter in the A pillar?

4. Did the JL TR650-CXI fit in the 5.25" mount OK? Or, did you have to go at it with a dremel?

JL vs. Infinity?

People seem to like JL. Anyone ever compared the JL TR650-CXI toInfinity Kappa 60.7cs 6-1/2" component speakers ? The Kappas are $120 at Amazon. I don't find the TR650-CXI at Amazon, but it seems to be $100 - $150. Crutchfield has the $150 price. The have the Kappas for $250.

I've got Infinity Kappa 693.7i 6x9" for the rear. So, there might be some value in sticking with Kappas for the front -- unless JL are just so much better for a better price.

I wanted the kappas in the front as well but went with the reference because I thought I would not be able to get the external crossovers in their. but you might be able to get the crosses velcrowed inside the door panel. I put Kappa tweets in the a pillars, did not use the crossovers. 4" in the door I had to do some dremeling. 6 1/2 went in smooth.

The thing about the MINI HIFI is that you should not use the crossovers that come with the speakers. There are already crossovers in the HIFI amp (or perhaps in the head unit). Having two crossovers in series is, supposedly, not a good idea.

When you guys say "boost", you mean HiFi, right?

Isn't "boost" from the 1st gen mini's?

I was confused by this too. I have the HiFi 10 speaker upgrade. It says "boost" on the cd player. What does that mean?

DARKCHILI,

Did the speakers you used fit exactly... no cutting or mods required? I would be most concerned about the 6 1/2" speakers fitting...

Was it as simple as taking off the door panel, removing the speakers, connecting the wires, replacing the new speakers, then reassembling the door?

Thanks for the info!
