Cable, top mechanism, drivers side

Above the driver there is a cable threaded though the top cloth to the passengers side. On my car it is broken and needs replacement. I still have some time left on the dealers warranty but if the part isn't too difficult to replace I'll just do it myself since the dealer is in an out of the way location. (Amazing how 10 miles on Long Island can take upwards of 45 minutes each way!!)

Has anyone encountered the job? Is the part reasonably priced?

Hello Paul,

The cable I believe you are talking about is the tension rope cables , not the sunroof cable set correct.

Sunroof cables for the convertible top.

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/54347174761/

#11 tension cable Left and right , These set under the top and are a smaller solid cable with a crimped tube end towards the front.

Left ( driver side )

&

Right ( passenger side )

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/54347079878/

You have to get under the top for the middle and rear section. The Front snaps into a couple little tabs which the end of the cable has a crimped metal tube on. When you close the roof all the way it pulls the cable tight.

Thanks and let me know.

Thanks for the info. Upon further investigation, with some help from a post on the MA site, I discovered that the cable in question appears to be a batten and nothing more. It shifted toward the drivers side, but doesn't seem to have any attachment points. It's about an inch forward of the cable that does go from one side to the other and that cable is an inch or so in front of the first bow, the rearmost point of the sunroof part.

Which one in the picture? ; " batten " that you are referring to ?

#6 is the bow. #13 is the little plastic strip that attaches to the back of the #2 the main plastic panel. #17 in the felt strip that goes on the #1 part.

Thanks

Perhaps the item I am referring to is #6. It isn't clear enough to me from the pictures. Either way, the cable/bow/batten is able to slide from side to side because on my top at least, it isn't captured in a pocket and had worked its way to the drivers side, appearing to be connected on one side but broken on the passengers side. After a bit of probing, I realized the piece wasn't connected at either end.

#6 Part # 54347162761 : is the wire bow and should be centered and snap into the side a little. There are little plastic snaps on each end. Can you see anything on each side. It should be slid into the sleeve in the fabric top as its a structure item.

I'm attempting to attach images of the cable in question and the condition as it is right now. Otherwise they are in my profile, ,

Yea. That's the metal rod , "wire bow", That is stitched into the top. Not a separate part. Its metal finish. Looks like your end is popped out of the stitched section and went to the side. The black wire bow, back towards the center snaps into the side. Should be centered to the top with equal ends sticking out. But there should be one in the back. See pic below to match your top. The wire bow is at the bottom. stitch one towards the front (top ). See if you can get it back in place. I would think fabric glue would reseal the ends.

Your top

Another top underside. Click on the attached photo for a better view.

Stitched in version wire bow in red. Does not come out the ends.

Thanks

Cool. Thanks for the info. I can slide it back into the pocket and I'll try a fabric glue to hold it.

Great,

Just make sure its back in and centered. Hopefully it did not poke the bottom of fabric.

If you need anything else convertible wise , let me know.

Thanks

Hello. I am having a problem with the Wire Bow on my 2005 Mini convertible. The hook on the driver's side has popped out twice, jamming the works and keeping the sunroof section from closing. There is a plastic sleeve on the passenger side hook of the Wire Bow, but no on the driver's side hook. It appears to me that the Wire Bow has simply spread a little wider than its original shape. Regardless, do you have any suggestions for a fix? Thanks!

There is a plastic sleeve cap on each end where the J hook end goes in .

Or at least there should be. :- ) The one on my driver's side end has disappeared. Does the plastic sleeve help to hold it in? And, can I purchase them separately?

Yea, its helps and that the main bow is not bent and looks like the pic above, when taken out.

We have been looking for that cap as it does not come with 54347162761 .

Possible those come in another install kit with hardware but the etk parts diagram does not tell me. 54347162763 , 54347167333 , or 54347162762

The shape of my Wire Bow is about the same as the one pictured. It would be difficult to say that they match exactly from the illustration. I can't imagine that replacing the bow would help. What do you think?

The wire bow can slip out of place on the end if the bow was bent for some reason on opening, also from the clips on the ends from popping out. Most likely its not bent, but i have seen it. I think the issue is that missing clip which I think is in one of those kits above .

Thanks for following up. I'm not certain what to do about the clips, as it doesn't make sense to me to purchase the kits if there is no guarantee that the clips are included in any of them. Are you reachable by phone?

I think the best way is to wait and I will contact people here and see if we can get them in and find out. It may take a couple days to get in.

If you wait I bet we can figure this out on the clips. Other people have asked about this clip in the past. Thanks

More info..... My wife has a 2006 Mini Convertible. The assembly appears to be quite different. There is a piece of sheet metal that has additional fittings where the end of the Wire Bow adjoins another metal component. The fittings are clearly designed to keep the Wire Bow in position. Would you look at the parts diagram for her model and see if upgrading a few parts on my 2005 to the 2006 assembly might solve my problem?
Thanks, Armand

The early 2005 design did not have those short pegs on the , The later 2005 design have the pegs , which early 2005 models would have to shave down. I know that was the major change, but this was on those front cables.

I dont see any change in years on the wire bow via the parts diagram. Do you have any pics and I can compare them against an 05'.

Here are 4 photos through this download link. http://www.communitydevelopmentsoftw...e-Wire_Bow.zip Each is labeled. The 2005 photo shows the driver's side hook for the Wire Bow, and how it is floating freely. The 3 - 2006 photos show the same connecting in different degrees of magnification. The steel fitting held in place with the Torx screw has a plastic insert on the 2006 that appears to help hold the hook of the Wire Bow in place. Thanks again for all of your help!

Any luck? Would it help to try to find a part # on the steel fitting that I've been referring to?
