HK amp

I have a 2004 R50 with the HK audio system. The system stopped working it would go on for a few seconds then go dead. With the head unit turned off I would get some noises from the hatch area where the amp is for a few minutes when I first start the car.I found a used amp locally and installed it and got no sound at all.I went back to the seller and he said it worked before he pulled it from a 2004 R50.It's my word against his.Can there be another problem in the system that I'm missing? He owns a trans shop and buys Mini's with bad trans and either fixes them or parts them out.He said I could come by his shop and plug it into the car he pulled it from.I live in NJ his shop is in Brooklyn which is a hassle to get to with about $20 in tolls.Let me know if there is anything I can check in the system before I take the ride.
