OBX catless downpipe?

I was scouring the internet loking for deals, and noticed a couple of ebay sellers auctioning off new OBX Catless downpipes in the price range of $150-$250. Looking closly; I dont think the downpipes are a direct bolt-on, but perhaps someone here can talk about their experience. Seems OBX makes exhaust parts for mainly Japaneese vehicles; like Subaru and Toyota, and they seem fairly happy with the product...

I added a picture f the OBX downpipe to this thread in case no one has seen it yet.

Also, OBX headers seem to be a popular product for the R53 crowd.

A pipe is a pipe right? For the price you can't really go wrong, I've been looking at getting an OBX downpipe for some time now just waiting for the 02 Sensor Simulators from Riss Racing to be ready.

People will argue about quality of materials, etc... but then again a lot of the more expensive downpipes have fitment issues and longevity issues as well.

As far as making power, it should be comparable to any other downpipe the same diameter.


P.S. I saw this exact downpipe on Ebay for 150 last week

I had an OBX header on my R53 and loved it. For the price, it just could not be beat.

Good to see they are making downpipes for the 56 now. As JamesHunt said, OBX are generally 100% knock-off's of Supersprint stuff, which is a good thing.

I did a little more research and indeed the OBX setup on ebay sure does look like the SuperSprint pieces I found here:

Not only that, but the current $149 ebay OBX versions appear to be coming with a downpipe AND a front connecting pipe. Supersprint wants over $900 for the set.

Whose wants to dive in on this?

Great bang for the buck

With the connecting pipe you can run ac schnitzer,borla,nm engineering and a few other exhaust systems.

Good price and deal for a dp. OBX has been getting better in recent years. However things to caution with them are they generally are not as durable. Watch for weld leaks. Besides that its a great buy!

Does that mean that you'd only use half this system on a factory JCW (since we only have one cat)?

I dont think its that simple. It would appear from the picture that the OBX downpipe is much longer than the factory dp meaning you'd probably have to custom fit/weld some pieces to make it work. Thats not to say it wont work though becase i have no real idea beyond what I see. It appears the pieces are made to fit a complete aftermarket exhaust system.

One thing that concerns me is that there is no flex pipe to help with engine movement... You might need to cut the OBX DP to the proper length and weld a vband to the OBX to get it to replace the factory DP. VBand flanges are like $20 on ebay.

the obx is a boly on,the second pipe is to replace the factory cat on a cooper s .

I would say the OBX is NOT a bolt on. It doesnt even have a V-Band flange, and the downpipe appears much longer than other companies.

Now, maybe we could cut and weld a V-Band to this DP reasonably

I dont think this is trickery... The OBX downpipe seriously looks about 4-6 inches longer than one from say Riss Racing.

Please explain why this DP is a bolt on replacement. Take a look at the picture I posted in my second thread response and compare it will this picture of the Riss Racing DP.

look at the obx catalog ,the replacement obx cat back bolts up to the stock downpipe.

Im buying it so i will let you all know . Its cheap enough to play with and OBX has improved their reputation a lot in the last few years. I wasnt about to pay what other vendors are trying to charge for a very simple mandrel bend system.

I used the OBX headers on my R53. Payed $160, and they went strong till the moment my car got smashed up by a 4wd. Very impressed with OBX. Price was too ridiculous to ignore. Maybe I'll buy this DP for my JCW

Does OBX have a downpipe with the cat? If they copied Supersprint, they should have one..

Supersprint does not offer a catted downpipe for the r56 the optional cat located in the midpipe.

It is definetly too long to be a direct bolt on. If you cut it you'll also have to weld a new flange onto your exhaust. The stock flange is expensive to duplicate.

I've traditionally only offered our WMW downpipe with a cat. But we just did one for a customer that was catless, so if enough other people want one we'll start offering that too.

So theres not a good way to weld a v-band clamp onto ths DP to make it compatible with the factory DP back? Since the JCW cars do not have a cat after the DP this could be a good option if it can be done.

I see v-band flanges all over the internet.
