Mini Cooper 2001-2013: How to Change 6 Speed Automatic Transmission Fluid

Like many modern automatic transmissions, Mini has stated the fluid in the 6-speed automatic transmission is good for the life of the vehicle. However, many enthusiasts have discovered that changing the fluid every 50k miles not only helps the longevity of the transmission, but also smooths gear changes.

This article applies to the Mini Cooper with 6-speed automatic (2001-2013).

Over time, automatic transmission fluid will break down, whether the manufacturer states the fluid is good for life or not. Once the transmission fluid breaks down too far, it will no longer provide the necessary lubricant properties for something operating at 200 degrees Fahrenheit. This could cause permanent transmission damage. Changing out the fluid in your Mini will help it shift better, but will also help with the longevity of the transmission. Changing transmission fluid can be quite messy, and you also need a completely level space to work in, but for a few hours of your time, you'll keep your Mini happy for a long time to come.

Materials Needed

  • 6 quarts of JWS 3099 fluid (Toyota TIV fluid is also compatible)
  • Replacement crush washer
  • Ratchet with 10mm and 13mm sockets and extension
  • T25 and T55 Torx screwdrivers
  • 5mm Allen/hex wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Large drain pan
  • Funnel or fill tool
  • Rags
  • Tarp
  • Jack and jack stands

Step 1 – Lift the car

You're going to need access to both the top and bottom of the car, but most of the work will be underneath it. Lift the car with a jack and set it on jack stands using the appropriate jacking points. Once the car is lifted, lay down a tarp underneath the transmission to keep the floor clean.

Step 2 – Drain the transmission

Get underneath the transmission and look for the large round hex bolt. That would be the drain plug. Take your large drain pan and put it underneath the drain plug. Then use a wrench to remove the plug. Some fluid will spill out. Above the drain plug you'll find another plug. This is the overflow tube. When you remove the overflow tube, most of the transmission fluid will start pouring out so be ready for when it happens. Wait for the fluid to stop draining before continuing.

Step 3 – Pour in new transmission fluid

Reinstall the overflow tube, but leave the drain plug off for now. Locate the fill plug on top of the transmission. It's under the main air intake hose. Undo the clamp to the intake hose so you can reach the fill plug. Find a funnel that will fit the plug. Then carefully and slowly pour new fluid into the transmission. Continue to pour in new fluid until you can see fluid coming out from the bottom of the transmission.

Return the fill plug and air intake tube. Then start the car. Cycle through all the transmission gears, pausing at each gear for a few seconds to allow the new fluid to circulate. Then stop the car and remove the fill plug and pour in some more fluid. Every time you add fluid, check the dipstick to ensure that it's at the correct level. If the fluid coming out of the transmission is still dark instead of bright red, then you should drain and refill a few more times until most of the fluid is bright red.

When you've finished, return the fill plug as well as the drain plug and then lower the car. Your gear changes will feel different for a little while, since it takes time for the ECU to adapt, but eventually it should feel as good as new.

Pro Tip

Don't forget to put the fill plug back on before you start the car, otherwise transmission fluid will start spraying everywhere.
