I complained about poor mpg in another section of NAM. As it turned out, the rear brakes were not releasing causing a huge dip in mpgs. This condition came and went, but about two months became so bad that i lost about 90 miles from each tank full. While removing, cleaning and lubing all suspension components in the rear, I took an opportunity to remove the two pins that each caliper slide on...vise grips were required to get these off. Apparently, BMW did not clean or lube these after the last brake service - new rotors and pads. I also specifically complained about poor rear brake durability..."brakes work just fine." The new brakes are shot after 3,500 miles of driving...I thought it was more. BMW inspected the brakes and is giving me a full credit towards future work...better than nothing. I bought aftermarket stuff to replace the stockers.
The pins are the Tyrol Sport type and require constant attention in winter weather. I cleaned and lubed these at every oil change last summer - about once a month. In cold winter temps, I simply didn't take the time to be as vigilant...but niether did BMW during the service.
mpgs went from a low of 23.1 to high 30.1 combined city/highway. This is a best case scenario based on driving the speed limit at all times. 29mpg is more realistic.
My car also feels like it gained about 50hp and does not lurch or stumble from first gear. Amazing!!!
Keep yer pins lubed!!!

It takes diligence and time, but very well worth the effort. Good post. I just got through talking about the same issue in another thread started as "first gen problems\brake clicking noise" I think.

I just bought a set of the Tyrol pins and am a little leary of using them. The stock rubber bushings are there for a reason. Brake calipers have to give a little, depening on rotor runout and caliper alignment. If both are not perfect, I can see pulsing at the pedel and wearin time for the pads if all is not parallel. And the preventative maintenence on the pins! I am new to this forum and just thinking outloud with my questions and concerns. Someone guide me and tell me without a doubt why I should install these. I drive only on street and highway and just want to spice up the brakes a little on the first replacement. I intend to order new rotors, pads, and stainless lines also.
Thanks in advance and dont want to hijack the thread.
