brake job
brake job
First, KUDOS to OctaneGuy! I finally got up my nerve and tried a DIY brake job. I have a 03' S model with low mileage. I have been following articles on various modifications that could improve my Mini(hard to do). I knew I still had factory pads on from my last trip to the dealer for service-a two hr. drive. They threw out tons of black dust on very white wheels. After some research, I decided on the Australian produced pbr ULT ceramic pads. I would suggest to future DIY'ers a 'shop glove' quotient. Mine was '5'-meaning that I went thru five pairs of gloves. Obviously, I'm not the most proficient guy on the block. With my laptop at the ready, I started on the front wheels. 'Piece a' cake'! For you first timers, DON'T WEAR A WATCH! Now to the DISCLAIMER. To any DIY'ers who use the pbr's for replacement.
The front pads come packaged and the inboard outboard pads are obvious.
The rear pads, however, come packaged with both inboard together and both outboard together. Just something to watch. Also, as I had not lit my brake sensor light, I didn't have to replace it. On the left front pad, no problem. On the right rear pad, not slot for the brake sensor. I just tied it off. Seems to be O.K. Got it done, tested and working. If there isn't already a book on the way from OctaneGuy re: DIY jobs on MINI"s, there should be. Oh, buy the Harbor Freight tool. It's worth it. For all you first timers out there. Go for it. Even as a middle of the road senior, I had fun. Thanks again, OctaneGuy.

What guide(s) did you use for doing your brakes? I know nothing about replacing brake pads or rotors and am thinking about trying my first soon. I'd love to find something MINI specific.
I assume the Harbor Freight tool is the tool to work the rear calipers?
