I Like them, but not with the Pirelli run-flats I got from the dealer. The ride is too hard when passing big buoys (is it well spelled?).

Finally it's the time to replace them with no run-flats. Which tire is the best for a city with plenty of potholes?

And I also agree that they hold extremely well the potholes

Hope it helps.

I had mine chromed when I bought my MCS and I still like them. Yeah there are much lighter wheels, but I wanted to keep my car looking stock and do all the mods under the hood.
I did put larger (215/45/17) non-run flat tires.

That's interesting...I am also buying my car from LB Mini. I hope I get a license plate number like that when I take delivery in a couple weeks. It would make it easier to remember at least.

I like the S-lites. I think that they look good on the Mini. They have held up well to the NE weather and pot holes. If any one wants to sell them let me know. I have 24,000 on my RF's. I will probably need a change at 30,000. If you have all-season RF's I would be interested. Sometimes the lighter wheels get really beat up during the winter.

I am willing to concede that white S-Lites on a MINI with a white roof are somewhat palatable to me.

Dealer swap

before our '06 came in, I was going to get my dealer to swap the S-lites for 16" runflats as I was worried about such a low profile tire. Once the Mini arrived I forgot all about swaping tires, but my dealer was willing to do it for no cost. I didn't like the S-Lite in pictures as it looked like a wagon wheel, but it did look better in person. Do I like them now? Not really, but I prefer the look of a 15" wheel so I just ordered a set of 15" Ultralegerras @ 12 lbs per wheel, so that's less than half what the S-lite weighs. But if you want to run a 17" wheel and don't worry about bent rims it's not a bad way to go, and S-lites are cheap and plentiful.

I like them

1. As others have said.....They just look right, clasic design blended with the new proportions. I have no doubt that as this cars lines developed these wheels were the ones that were intended to be on the S by the designer

2. Who cares whether they are heavy (autocrosser's aside) when was the last time your wheels won you a trophy? and I guess I just cant feel 12lbs per wheel performance diffrence.....But keep in mind, I test drove a JCW MCS and couldn't really feel much diffrence there either

3. easy as pie to clean

I dont like them, but thats my personal opinion. They are too heavy for my taste, and too big. I actully like 15s/16s nothing bigger. But for the MCS's quick gearing i believe the 16's are a perfect combo for the car.

I believe Grassroots Motor Sports had an artical about the MINI and mentioned something about rim sizes for the car.

I don't like them . . . in fact, I hate them. They are responsible for slow braking, harsh ride, sluggish handling, poor off-the-line acceleration, low self-esteem, high gas prices, male pattern baldness, childhood obesity,
e-coli in our spinach and global warming. They simply have no place in civilized society. They must be stopped. Death to the S-Lites

Oh well...I guess it'll take me another 20 years of storing my mint S-lites before they're worth anything...by that time, there'll be a box of Pirelli rubber dust included for free :impatient

I love my s-lytes....I know they are heavy, but I love the style. I only wish I had a spare white set for show purposes.

I have read all the posts so far with a great deal of attentivness. Here is my decision.
I will keep the silver S-Lites my wife ordered for the Colorado winters and early springs. I will get a more stylish and lighter 16" wheel and tire combo for summer and early fall.

So Mote it Be
Motor On

And much much nicer.

I think S-lytes are responsible for global warming.
Or was it Al Gore who said that?????

The S-lytes in chrome are really nice and Bling Bling but chrome adds up to 2 pounds per rim--- Yuk!

JJ Blue,

You have the right idea. From a practical point of view your plan will work.
17" snow tires aren't quite as good as smaller 15" or 16" snow tires (narrow tires work better in deep snow) but if your winters are light you'll be fine. They will be pretty nice wheels for the winter though.

Lightweight 16" rims will feel so good by comparison. Now the decision is which rim and which tire?

Runflats work with any wheels. S-leads are an even worse choice for slippy roads than for dry roads as they are slow responding. I switched to 16's and the difference in steering input and off the line is very noticable. To me the 16" Daytonas look more like the Minilites while the S-leads look like rough castings suitable for ship balast.

I found my way in here looking for the weights of the s-lites..but while I'm here I'll throw in my bit...

I reckon they are great looking wheels, but do concede that they do nothing but damage the handling of the car. Coupled with the horrible run-flats they are seriously lame...

BUT...in Australia, where the roads are third world, sometimes it helps to have wheels as solid as the s-lites...after-all...there no way in hell you could bend one!!

They look good, but I'll take the performance of lighter rotational mass with aftermarket wheels anyday. On a small car it makes such a big difference. If only they, ( S lites), weighed less.

Question...

Let's say a person having S-lites and RF's wanted to get a better set of wheels could someone help that person by recommending a better set of wheels and tires.

TIA

^^ Oh, a wise guy, eh?
Seriously Frank, this entire subforum is devoted to exactly that question. And everyone seems to have a different opinion. No problem there, everyone's taste is different. Go to www.tirerack.com and look at what is available that might suit your taste. Pick any wheel weighing less than 25lbs and you will be ahead on the wheel weight game.
