Rotors and Pads Bed/Break In Procedure
Rotors and Pads Bed/Break In Procedure
I've just installed a new set of Cryo Frozen Power Slot rotors and Ferodo DS2500's on my MCS. The break in procedures for each are different, I'm confused as to which to follow.
Here is the brake in procedure for the Power Slot's:
Make 6-10 stops from 35mph to 5mph applying moderate pressure. When brakes cool, make another 2-3 hard stops form 50mph to 10mph. The system should be cycled by firmly applying brake pressure to produce heat in the system, but only for short periods of time. Allow the system to cool and repeat the process.
This is the procedure for the Ferodo:
Perform 25 to 30 trial brake applications, each of approximately 4 seconds, using around 50% of normal race pedal pressure.
Which of the two should i follow? Is there a generic way of bedding in brake pads an rotors? Thanks!
John

I've always used the procedure on Stop-Tech's website and it's worked well for me...

Specifically, the Bedding In Street Performance Pads directions (which includes pads like the Ferodos).

There's lots of variations on the procedure, but I get this as the general principle: you need to get the rotors and pads pretty warm first, then a few hard stops to heat them to where the pad material leaves a fine layer on the rotor, which remains, or gets replaced at a constant rate.
I recently installed TCE/Wilwoods and the break in instructions followed this general outline. I ran the car for 5 minutes with partial brake applied to warm up the parts, then a series of hard stops from 40-ish to near stop, never hard enough to fully engage the ABS, but never stopping completely to allow lockup. Follow with a cooling down period. I noticed there was pad material transfer which has remained constant on the rotors.
Anyway, that's my experience.
